A shocking case has surfaced involving Indian Premier League (IPL) cricketer Amit Mishra, who has been accused by his wife of demanding dowry, inflicting physical and mental abuse, and even attempting to drive her to suicide. The complaint has been lodged at the Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Court in Kanpur by 35-year-old model Garima Tiwari.
Garima alleges that since their marriage, Mishra and his family members subjected her to repeated harassment and torture. The accused in the case include Amit Mishra, his mother Beena Mishra, father Shashikant Mishra, brother Amar Mishra, sister-in-law Ritu Mishra, and sister Swati Mishra.
According to Garima, she met Amit Mishra in 2019 through Instagram. After nearly three years of courtship, the couple married on 26 April 2021 at a Kanpur club. However, Garima claims that almost immediately after the wedding, Mishra and his family began pressuring her family to provide a Honda City car and an additional ₹1,000,000 as dowry. Her family managed to give ₹250,000 at the time of marriage, but Mishra’s family allegedly continued to demand more money.
Garima described a pattern of repeated abuse:
Mishra allegedly assaulted her while intoxicated, verbally abused her, and at times denied her food.
He reportedly seized earnings from her modelling career and frequently threatened divorce.
The psychological toll of this treatment led her to abandon her modelling career.
At one point, Garima attempted suicide by consuming phenyl and had to be hospitalised.
She further stated that despite approaching the police multiple times, no First Information Report (FIR) was filed due to Mishra’s influence. Consequently, she turned to the courts for redress. Her lawyer, Karim Ahmed Siddiqui, remarked, “Repeated complaints to the police went unheeded, leaving us with no option but to file the case in court.”
