Despite claims by the Trump administration that the United States is prevailing in the ongoing Middle East conflict, senior Pentagon officials suggest otherwise. According to these officials, Iranian forces are adapting their military strategies in response to sustained attacks from the United States and Israel.
Since the war began eleven days ago, Iranian-backed forces have reportedly targeted key U.S. air defence and radar installations across the region, demonstrating a shift in tactics from direct confrontation to strategic disruption, military analysts say.
Iranian-supported groups have launched attacks on locations known to house U.S. personnel. In Erbil, Iraq, a luxurious hotel was struck by a drone attack, signalling that Tehran is aware of U.S. troop deployments.
Three U.S. officials told reporters that Iran has likely concluded it cannot match the United States or Israel in conventional firepower. However, by surviving large-scale assaults and striking strategic vulnerabilities, Tehran can claim these actions as symbolic victories.
According to Pentagon data, since the start of hostilities:
| Metric | U.S. Forces | Iranian Forces | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fatalities | 7 | ~1,300 | Most Iranian deaths are reported civilians |
| Injured | 140 | – | 108 U.S. personnel have returned to duty |
| Counterstrikes | – | ≥30 | Iranian retaliatory attacks across the Middle East |
Iran has increasingly targeted U.S. weak points, particularly interceptor systems and air defence installations used to protect U.S. forces and assets. Analysts note that these strikes reflect a sophisticated understanding of both defensive gaps and prior conflict lessons.
During a 12-day clash last June, U.S. and Israeli air defence systems were heavily strained. Reports indicate that 20–50% of U.S. THAAD interceptor missiles were expended at that time.
Vali R. Nasr, an Iran specialist at Johns Hopkins University, commented,
“It is remarkable how quickly Iran has applied lessons from previous conflicts. They understand the limits of their defensive and missile capabilities.”
Nasr added that the reduced U.S. stockpiles may allow Iran to deploy more advanced missile attacks in the near future.
Previously, Iran often issued warnings before attacks or conducted symbolic strikes to preserve honour. For example, last year, following a U.S.-ordered strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, Tehran issued a warning before striking a U.S. base in Qatar.
This time, however, Iranian forces have foregone advance warnings, damaging early-warning radar systems at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and targeting communication infrastructure at Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Air Bases in Kuwait.
Initially, Iranian drones focused on Israel, but current operations target U.S. allies and assets in Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Bahrain, deploying thousands of inexpensive drones in a broad regional campaign.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth acknowledged that Iran’s recent aggressive retaliation exceeded expectations but described it as an expression of desperation and a strategic miscalculation.
General Dan Keane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed that Iran is changing tactics but withheld operational details for security reasons. According to Pentagon data, recent ballistic missile attacks have decreased by 90%, and drone strikes have fallen by 83% due to U.S. countermeasures.
Nevertheless, U.S. intelligence remains concerned about Iran’s undisclosed missile launch sites, including potential stockpiles of advanced and hypersonic missiles, which could be reserved for high-value targets.
Experts note that even if Iran’s top leadership were to be killed early in the conflict, Iranian forces have not collapsed. The military appears to operate in a coordinated manner, demonstrating continuity in command and strategy, suggesting Tehran’s leadership remains functionally intact despite sustained pressure.
This adaptation underscores Iran’s ability to learn from prior engagements, exploit vulnerabilities, and continue strategic operations under intense military pressure, challenging assumptions of a rapid U.S.-led victory.
