The group stage of the UEFA Champions League has concluded, ushering in the highly anticipated knockout rounds. The first legs of the Round of 16 see Europe’s elite clubs face off, each bringing rich histories and compelling statistics into the battle. Here is a detailed look at each matchup ahead of today’s games.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Arsenal

Bayer Leverkusen have been formidable against English opposition in recent European tournaments, winning four of their last five two-legged ties. Arsenal, in contrast, have lost all five of their most recent two-legged encounters against German clubs, each against Bayern Munich.

In this season’s Champions League, Arsenal have won eight consecutive matches, their longest streak in European competitions. Only Manchester City surpasses this among English clubs, with ten straight victories from 17 May 2023 to 6 March 2024. Arsenal have scored first in every one of these eight matches and have netted three or more goals in six of them.

Leverkusen, however, have struggled in the Round of 16, having been eliminated in six consecutive campaigns.

PSG vs Chelsea

In eight European encounters, PSG have triumphed three times against Chelsea, who have won twice, with three matches ending in draws. Against English clubs in general, PSG have lost only once in their last eight matches, having knocked out Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal in the previous season.

PSG have participated in the Round of 16 for 14 consecutive Champions League campaigns and have never drawn a knockout match 0-0 in their last 58 fixtures. Chelsea, meanwhile, have won all six of their last matches against French sides and have prevailed in 13 of their last 16 knockout ties overall.

Bodø/Glimt vs Sporting Lisbon

This is the first-ever knockout tie between Norwegian and Portuguese clubs in European competition. Bodø/Glimt have set a record as the first Norwegian team to win four consecutive Champions League matches. In the Europa League, they also maintained a perfect record against Portuguese opposition by defeating Porto and Braga.

Sporting Lisbon have historically struggled in the Round of 16, never progressing beyond this stage in the Champions League era. Their only quarter-final appearance in European competition came in the 1982–83 season of the European Cup.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City

These two clubs meet in the knockout stage for the fifth consecutive season. Across 15 encounters, each side has recorded five wins and five draws, a perfectly balanced head-to-head.

Real Madrid have advanced past the Round of 16 in 13 of their last 15 ties but have failed to beat English sides in their last four encounters. Manchester City’s record against Spanish opposition in 18 matches includes just three defeats, alongside ten victories and five draws. Notably, 12 of Vinícius Jr.’s last 13 Champions League goals have come in the second half, highlighting Madrid’s late-match threat.

With such rich histories, current form, and statistical trends, today’s Round of 16 fixtures promise high drama and potentially decisive moments, setting the stage for an electrifying knockout stage.
