In Joypurhat, a serious allegation has emerged against a local student leader, Abir Iftekhar, accusing him of detaining a newlywed woman, demanding money from her expatriate family member, and physically assaulting her at home. In response, Abir has been issued a “show-cause” notice by the Khetlal Upazila Chhatra Dal, requiring him to explain his conduct.
The notice, signed by Ferdous Rahman Milon, Joint Convener of Khetlal Upazila Chhatra Dal, was issued on Tuesday, 10 March. It states that during his tenure as president of the Chhatra Dal in Mamudpur Union, Abir Iftekhar has been accused in various newspapers and on social media of financial extortion and physical assault. These allegations have caused widespread public discussion and criticism, prompting the organisation to seek clarification.
The notice instructs Abir to appear in person and submit a written explanation to the Upazila Chhatra Dal President, K.M. Hasan, and General Secretary, Rashedul Islam, within three working days. Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe may result in organisational disciplinary measures.
Speaking to the press, Rashedul Islam, General Secretary of Khetlal Upazila Chhatra Dal, stated, “The allegations came to our attention following a viral social media video posted by a youth named Liton Molla. Given the nature of the claims, the leadership decided to issue a show-cause notice to Abir Iftekhar to clarify the matter.”
In response, Abir Iftekhar told Kalbela, “I have neither demanded money from anyone nor detained the newlywed woman. There is a conspiracy against me to frame me. The young woman came to me for help, and I assisted her in arranging her marriage.”
