Brazil are set to play two World Cup warm-up fixtures against France and Croatia, but concerns over star forward Neymar’s fitness have cast uncertainty over his place in the final squad. Under coach Carlo Ancelotti, Neymar remains in the preliminary squad, but recent injuries could jeopardise his selection.
The first friendly takes place on 26 March against France, followed by a clash with Croatia on 1 April. Brazilian media outlets O Globo and UOL report that Neymar will miss an upcoming Série A match for Santos against Mirassol due to a recurring muscular injury. Ancelotti will observe the match from the stands, underscoring its importance in evaluating the players ahead of final squad announcements.
Neymar’s absence from the Mirassol game could significantly influence his chances of being included in the World Cup roster. According to reports, Santos’ medical team granted Neymar rest after he reported discomfort, prioritising recovery over immediate participation. He is scheduled to play only one match before Ancelotti finalises the squad, facing Corinthians in a Serie A encounter. For that fixture, Ancelotti will not be present in the stadium.
Neymar last featured for Santos on 27 February against Vasco da Gama, scoring twice and attracting widespread attention. Since then, the 34-year-old forward has not appeared in competitive matches, participating instead in gym sessions and team tactical drills. Brazilian media emphasise that Ancelotti intends to include Neymar in the final squad only if he is fully fit, following a long-standing policy of prioritising player health. Neymar’s last appearance for the national team was in October 2023.
The table below summarises Neymar’s recent activity and fitness status:
| Date | Match/Event | Participation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27 Feb 2026 | Santos vs Vasco da Gama | Full match, 2 goals | Strong performance, last competitive game |
| Mar 2026 | Weekly training | Gym work only | Did not join on-field drills |
| 25 Mar 2026 | Santos vs Mirassol | Did not play | Rest due to muscular injury |
| 30 Mar 2026 | Santos vs Corinthians | Scheduled to play | Final opportunity before World Cup squad |
| Oct 2023 | Brazil National Team | Last international match | Has not represented Brazil since |
Brazilian media suggest that Neymar’s performance and fitness in the Corinthians match may be decisive for his inclusion. Ancelotti and his coaching staff, including assistant coach Minois Fulco and goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel, will continue monitoring him closely.
Following the warm-up matches against France and Croatia, Ancelotti will announce Brazil’s final World Cup squad in May. The tournament kicks off on 11 June, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Neymar’s recovery and readiness remain under intense scrutiny, as Brazil look to field their strongest side for a World Cup campaign that promises to be fiercely competitive.
With his fitness in doubt, Neymar faces a pivotal period that could determine whether he features on football’s biggest stage or misses out due to injury concerns.
