The celebratory atmosphere at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 8 March resembled a festival of colour and excitement. India’s commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand national cricket team prompted jubilant scenes on the field, with players and supporters alike revelling in the triumph. Among those celebrating were Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, whose exuberant reactions quickly circulated on social media.

However, the post-match celebrations soon became the centre of controversy after allegations surfaced that Pandya had disrespected the Indian national flag while celebrating. A formal complaint has since been lodged against the star all-rounder, accusing him of violating laws governing the proper display and use of the flag.

How the controversy began

During the celebrations, Pandya was seen with the Indian tricolour draped across his back. At one point, while continuing the festivities, he reportedly lay down on the grass of the stadium with the flag still wrapped around him. Photographs and short video clips of the moment quickly spread online, triggering criticism from some observers who believed the act amounted to disrespect towards a national symbol.

The complaint was filed by Pune-based lawyer Wajid Khan at the Shivajinagar Police Station. According to local police officials, the lawyer has submitted an application requesting that an official First Information Report (FIR) be registered against Pandya. A police officer confirmed to NDTV on Wednesday that the application represents the first procedural step toward initiating a legal case.

Khan argued that the celebratory act violated the provisions of India’s national flag legislation. “During the final celebrations, Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend while the national flag was tied around his back,” he stated. “He was so immersed in the celebration that he eventually lay down with the flag wrapped around him. In my view, this constitutes disrespect towards the national flag.”

Legal basis of the complaint

The complainant cited Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which emphasises maintaining the dignity and proper handling of the national flag. According to the lawyer, the incident warranted legal scrutiny under this provision.

Initially, Khan said the police were reluctant to accept the complaint because the incident had occurred in Ahmedabad rather than Pune. However, he maintained that the national flag represents the entire country and therefore complaints concerning its alleged disrespect could be lodged anywhere in India. Eventually, the police accepted the written submission and provided him with a copy acknowledging receipt.

Celebrations after global cricket triumphs

The controversy stands in contrast to earlier celebratory scenes following India’s victory over South Africa national cricket team in the final of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On that occasion, team captain Rohit Sharma and batting star Virat Kohli posed with the national flag draped across their shoulders in celebratory photographs. Both players later announced their retirement from international Twenty20 cricket after the championship victory.

In Ahmedabad, similar celebratory images emerged after India’s win against New Zealand, with several players posing with the tricolour. Yet the particular moment in which Pandya lay on the ground with the flag around him sparked the backlash that ultimately led to the legal complaint.
