Doja Cat Reflects on Surgery and Lipedema

American singer and rapper Doja Cat has shared a personal account of her experiences with cosmetic surgery and a medical condition she now suspects may have influenced the shape of her body for many years.

In a candid video posted late at night on the social media platform TikTok, the artist revealed that she recently had what she described as an unexpected moment of realisation. While browsing images and information online, she began to suspect that she might have lipedema, a chronic condition that causes abnormal fat accumulation, typically in the legs and occasionally the arms.

The 30-year-old performer explained that she had long struggled to understand why certain parts of her body developed differently from others. According to her account, she initially believed the changes were simply the result of cellulite or natural body variation.

However, after comparing her appearance with documented cases of lipedema, she said the similarities were striking. She believes she may have experienced a mild or moderate stage of the condition earlier in her life.

Lipedema is a disorder affecting fat tissue that primarily occurs in women and is frequently misunderstood. The condition leads to disproportionate fat deposits in the lower body, particularly around the hips, thighs, knees and calves. In severe cases, swelling and discomfort can make walking difficult.

Medical researchers have also noted that the disorder can run in families. The singer indicated that her mother may have experienced similar symptoms, raising the possibility of a hereditary connection.

Medical Classification of Lipedema

Reflecting on earlier stages of her career, the artist recalled that her body proportions occasionally caused confusion in professional settings. While preparing costumes for a 2018 music video, she submitted measurements for a specially designed outfit. According to her recollection, the manufacturing team questioned whether the figures were correct because they appeared unusually proportioned.

The experience reinforced her belief that her body shape was atypical. Although she did not consider herself severely overweight, she explained that she accumulated fat in specific areas, particularly the hips, thighs and knees.

In 2023, the performer revealed that she had undergone liposuction in an effort to reshape parts of her lower body. The procedure targeted the thighs, hips and lower back, while other areas were left unchanged.

However, she later expressed regret about aspects of the surgery. After the initial procedure, she felt the balance of her body had shifted, making certain features appear disproportionately large. As a result, she decided to undergo a second operation to remove additional fat and achieve a more even silhouette.

Despite the corrective procedure, she said that years of fat accumulation followed by surgical reduction have left her with excess skin in some areas. This has altered the appearance of her figure in ways she did not fully anticipate at the time.

Her candid remarks have prompted renewed public discussion about lipedema, a condition many people remain unfamiliar with despite its prevalence. Health experts often stress that the disorder is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked, with individuals assuming their symptoms are related to weight gain alone.

By sharing her experience, the artist has highlighted the importance of greater awareness of lipedema and the need for careful medical evaluation before pursuing cosmetic procedures.
