Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has once again signalled his ambition to assume the presidency of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), emphasising his commitment to contributing to the sport beyond his playing career.
Tamim had planned to contest the previous BCB presidential election but withdrew amid allegations of governmental interference. His withdrawal was echoed by a large section of Dhaka-based club organisers, who had initially supported his candidacy. Despite stepping back at that time, Tamim recently confirmed in a podcast interview that he remains interested in leading the board if an opportunity arises.
Although he had retired from international cricket ahead of the 2023 One Day International (ODI) World Cup, Tamim briefly returned to play a single ODI before missing the tournament due to various complications. Since then, he has remained actively involved in club cricket, taking on organisational responsibilities and mentoring younger players, thereby maintaining a strong presence within Bangladesh’s cricketing community.
During the SamirSkien Podcast, Tamim was asked directly about his presidential aspirations. He stated: “If the opportunity arises, definitely.” When questioned about his suitability for the role, he replied with confidence: “I believe I am [qualified]. Certainly, I do.”
Explaining why he feels equipped to lead, Tamim highlighted the importance of intention, vision, and organisational ability over mere experience: “My capability as an organiser is recognised in the cricketing circle. Experience and age are important, but intention matters most. Even the most seasoned individuals have run BCB for decades—has it always performed exceptionally? For years, leadership relied on experienced figures; perhaps now, it’s time to trust someone like me, motivated and ready to bring a fresh perspective.”
