Tragic incidents of lightning strikes claimed the lives of two farmers in Nawabganj on Thursday morning (12 March), local authorities reported. The fatalities occurred in the Dhamairhat and Manda upazilas, highlighting the persistent risks faced by agricultural workers during sudden storms.
According to eyewitnesses, Jalal Uddin, son of Mokhlesur Rahman from Bhavir Mor in Dhamairhat, went to a pond adjacent to his home to harvest cucumbers amidst heavy rainfall. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck him on the spot, resulting in his immediate death. His family later retrieved his body from the scene.
In a separate incident in Manda upazila, Pintu, son of Moslem from Chakrampur Madhyapara near the Eidgah, was working in a rice field when he was struck by lightning. Local residents reported that he died instantly, while another person present sustained serious injuries. The injured individual was promptly taken to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Police officials visited both sites to investigate the incidents. Dhamairhat Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed the death of Jalal Uddin and emphasised that the area has been prone to sudden thunderstorms during the pre-monsoon season. Meanwhile, Manda OC Masud Rana described the Manda incident, noting the swift medical response for the injured worker and urging local communities to exercise caution during heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Such incidents serve as stark reminders of the dangers posed by lightning in rural areas, particularly for farmers working in open fields or near water bodies. Authorities continue to advise residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid exposed locations.
