Iran has assured Bangladesh that vessels carrying energy supplies will not face obstruction while passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns in Dhaka over potential disruptions to fuel imports amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Officials from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources said that the government had sought clarification from Tehran after fears grew that escalating regional conflict might threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime corridors for oil and liquefied natural gas transportation.
In response, Iranian authorities indicated that Bangladeshi vessels transporting crude oil, refined petroleum products, or liquefied natural gas would be allowed to pass safely through the waterway. According to officials, Iran requested that Bangladesh notify Iranian authorities before such ships enter the strait so that appropriate arrangements can be made to ensure smooth transit.
The reassurance comes at a time when the global energy market remains highly sensitive to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. Nearly one fifth of the world’s petroleum trade moves through the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption in this narrow shipping lane could have immediate consequences for international energy prices and supply chains.
Bangladesh, a rapidly growing economy with rising energy demand, depends heavily on imported fuel to sustain industrial production, electricity generation and transport. The country imports refined petroleum products from several Asian and Middle Eastern suppliers in order to meet domestic consumption needs.
A summary of Bangladesh’s key sources of refined petroleum imports is presented below:
| Supplier Country | Major Energy Products Supplied |
|---|---|
| Malaysia | Refined petroleum products |
| United Arab Emirates | Refined petroleum products |
| China | Refined petroleum products |
| Indonesia | Refined petroleum products |
| Thailand | Refined petroleum products |
| India | Refined petroleum products |
| Oman | Refined petroleum products |
| Kuwait | Refined petroleum products |
Officials say maintaining uninterrupted maritime supply routes is therefore a strategic priority for the government.
Meanwhile, both China and India have expressed willingness to support Bangladesh in managing any potential energy supply challenges. Authorities in Dhaka have been maintaining diplomatic and commercial communication with several countries to ensure adequate fuel availability if global supply chains are affected.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that the government is actively coordinating with international partners to secure sufficient fuel supplies. He emphasised that Bangladesh is monitoring the situation closely but sees no immediate risk of a severe energy shortage.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen also indicated that Beijing stands ready to cooperate with Dhaka in addressing energy challenges. According to the envoy, China is willing to work jointly with Bangladesh to stabilise supply arrangements and could provide energy assistance if the need arises.
Energy analysts note that the assurances from Iran, combined with support signals from regional partners, may help Bangladesh maintain stable fuel imports despite the uncertain geopolitical climate surrounding one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
