M. M. Siddique Miah, a senior Awami League leader and chairman of Algi Union Parishad in Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur, has been released on bail after serving 175 days in prison. Following his release on Sunday, 8 March, he was warmly welcomed at the Faridpur District Jail gate by Shahidul Islam Babul, the Member of Parliament representing Faridpur-4 from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who greeted him with flowers.

Siddique Miah, aged 57, had been detained in connection with a local boundary dispute between Faridpur-4 and Faridpur-2 constituencies, which triggered protests and road blockades last year. He served as one of the key coordinators of the movement opposing the Election Commission’s decision to reassign Algi and Hamirdi unions from Faridpur-4 to Faridpur-2, prompting widespread demonstrations across the Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Barishal highways.

Siddique Miah holds multiple roles, serving as the chairman of Algi Union Parishad and as the Awami League’s Upazila secretary for science and technology. He expressed gratitude towards Shahidul Islam Babul for his role in facilitating his release.

MP Babul, in turn, stated that prior to the 13th national parliamentary elections, he had pledged to provide legal assistance to those detained during the boundary protests. “Siddique Miah’s release is part of fulfilling that promise. Legal procedures are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining detainees as well,” he affirmed.

The controversy began when the Election Commission ruled to transfer Algi and Hamirdi unions from Faridpur-4 to Faridpur-2 in September 2025. Local residents responded with several rounds of demonstrations and road blockades to voice their opposition. Subsequently, the High Court ruled that the two unions should remain within Faridpur-4, ensuring that voters from the area participated in the 13th parliamentary elections under their original constituency.

Siddique Miah’s release marks a significant moment in the local political landscape, reflecting cooperation across party lines, at least on the issue of legal redress for protest-related detentions. The warm reception by a BNP MP underscores the nuanced dynamics of political interactions in Faridpur, where civic activism and party allegiance intersect.

This episode highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding constituency boundaries in Bangladesh and the role of political leaders in mediating conflicts while ensuring legal rights for participants in civic movements.
