Lionel Messi reportedly wanted to return to Barcelona—but why did the eagerly anticipated “last dance” at Camp Nou never materialise? Former Barcelona coach and Messi teammate Xavi Hernández has revealed explosive new details, suggesting that it was not a lack of desire from either player or club, but rather a power struggle at the top that blocked the legendary forward’s return.

Messi spent over two decades at Barcelona, beginning in the La Masia academy and progressing to the first team. In 2021, he left for Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer two years later. Yet, according to Xavi, Messi’s heart was always set on a return to his childhood club. Following Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, Messi personally expressed his desire to rejoin Barcelona in January 2023.

Speaking to Spanish daily La Vanguardia, Xavi recounted the details: “Everything had been agreed with Messi. After winning the World Cup, we spoke, and he told me he wanted to return. La Liga had given the green light. But at the last moment, the president cancelled everything.”

Xavi added, with evident regret, “We had prepared for a last dance, much like Michael Jordan’s farewell tour. But it never happened.” He then disclosed the crucial intervention: “It was Laporta who blocked it. He told me, word for word, that if Messi returned, he would be declaring war against him. He could not allow that. After that, Messi stopped answering my calls because he had been informed that a return was no longer possible.”

Laporta, who stepped down from the presidency weeks ago but is now campaigning for re-election, responded during a recent debate by dismissing Xavi’s claims as “disappointing.” He argued that the coach was removed because the team under Xavi was losing, and any perceived tension was a reflection of results rather than personal animosity.

“I saw the team struggling under Xavi,” Laporta said. “The same squad is now winning under Hans Flick. If Flick can succeed with these players, it is clear where the real issues lay.” Regarding Messi’s return, Laporta insisted that Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, had told him the player did not want to return to Barcelona due to the intense pressure he would face.

Despite the controversy, Messi’s legacy at Barcelona remains unrivalled: 672 goals scored, 34 trophies won, and a place as the club’s all-time leading scorer. Whether the true reasons behind his unfulfilled return will ever be fully known remains uncertain, leaving fans to speculate on what might have been.
