Bangladesh cricket continues to buzz with speculation over the potential return of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to the national side. Despite being away from the team for an extended period, Shakib remains a central figure in discussions across the cricketing fraternity, from sports ministers to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials and fellow players.
However, a comeback did not materialise for the recent Pakistan series. Speaking on Monday, 9 March, Bangladesh’s head coach Phil Simmons addressed the ongoing rumours, stating, “Whatever you have heard or read in newspapers, that is exactly what I know. I have no additional information regarding Shakib Al Hasan’s return.”
Simmons highlighted the tactical considerations that currently guide the team’s preparation, particularly with the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. Emphasising adaptability, he said, “Depending on conditions, we could use three spinners in a match. But it will not be the case that a spinner bowls only two overs. We must prepare the team with the pitch and conditions in mind.”
Another key focus for Simmons is improving performance during the middle overs, an area where Bangladesh has struggled in past 50-over games. “We have not been as effective in the middle overs as we had hoped. It is critical to monitor how many runs are being scored, the frequency of singles, and boundaries. This phase constitutes a significant portion of a 50-over innings,” he noted.
On the pace attack, Simmons outlined plans to bolster the team ahead of the global tournament. “We will aim to play with at least three fast bowlers,” he explained. “In South Africa, conditions will favour pace, so our bowlers must be ready to deliver consistently.”
The coaching team is therefore prioritising two key areas: strengthening the pace attack and enhancing run-scoring efficiency in the middle overs. Both elements are considered pivotal for competitive performance on World Cup pitches.
| Area | Current Status | Focus Ahead |
|---|---|---|
| Spin Strategy | Flexible, 1–3 spinners used depending on pitch | Ensure spinners contribute significantly to middle overs |
| Middle Overs Batting | Underperforming | Improve singles, boundaries, and scoring consistency |
| Pace Attack | Limited in recent series | Include at least three fast bowlers for South Africa conditions |
| World Cup Preparation | Early stage | Emphasise adaptability and strategic depth |
With the World Cup looming, Bangladesh’s team management is meticulously planning both bowling depth and batting stability. While Shakib’s return remains a topic of interest, the broader goal is to create a balanced and resilient squad capable of tackling diverse conditions abroad.
