A 25-year-old man, Md. Mahim, tragically lost his life after falling from a six-storey building in Anwara, Chattogram, on Tuesday (10 March) morning. The incident occurred outside the Anwara Upazila Health Complex at the Hashem Complex.
Md. Mahim, the son of Md. Abul Kamal from Daulatpur in Barautthan Union of Karnaphuli Upazila, had been residing for several years in Sholkata village near the health complex in Barkhain Union.
Local sources reported that Mahim was a well-known member of the teenage gang `Samrat Group’ and was considered a hardened criminal by the Anwara police. His name and photograph were officially recorded at the police station, and he had previously been arrested multiple times for theft and robbery.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, emergency services received notification early in the morning. Mahim was found injured at the scene and rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
News of his death quickly drew a crowd of his associates and relatives to the hospital, leading to confrontations with police personnel. In the ensuing chaos, some individuals broke the glass doors of the emergency department and locked the main hospital gate, heightening tensions. Military and police forces intervened to restore order.
Mahim’s mother, Monowara Begum, alleged foul play, stating: “My son was at home at 10 PM. Around 1:30 AM, someone called him out of the house, and in the morning, I learned that he had fallen from a building. I believe he was deliberately killed and demand a thorough investigation.”
The building owner, Abul Hashem, confirmed that he resides in the city and would be able to provide clarity about the incident upon inspection. Dr. Mahtabuddin Chowdhury, Family Planning Officer at Anwara Upazila Health Complex, reported that the crowd’s agitation escalated into property damage after Mahim’s death was confirmed.
Anwara Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Junayet Chowdhury, stated that the body had been sent to the morgue for autopsy. He suggested that Mahim’s death may have been the result of a fall while attempting burglary. He added that the deceased had four ongoing criminal cases registered at Anwara police station, which may have contributed to the unrest.
