In Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, two sons have been accused of fatally assaulting their 70-year-old father over a property dispute. The incident occurred around midnight on Monday in Noapara village, part of the Sabrang Union.
The deceased, Kala Mia, was a long-time resident of Noapara. Police have named his two sons, Shaker Alam and Monir Alam, as suspects. Preparations for formal legal proceedings are currently underway.
Local sources reported that Kala Mia lived with his wife and their eldest daughter, Elm Bahar. For several years, he had been engaged in disputes with his sons over the division of family property. Attempts at local mediation, including village arbitration, had failed to resolve the tensions.
Abul Faiz, a member of the Sabrang Union Parishad, said, “For at least two days before the incident, Kala Mia was being pressured by his sons regarding property. Last night, he was found unconscious at home. He was taken to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead.”
Elm Bahar, the eldest daughter of Kala Mia, recounted the sequence of events: “Last Sunday, my brother Monir Alam took my father to an unknown location. We were unable to find him all day. Around 12:30 a.m., he was found unconscious. When we brought him to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead. Both my brothers killed him out of greed for property.”
Dr Mamun Or Rashid, a doctor at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the deceased bore marks of physical assault. He stated, “The individual had already died before being brought to the hospital.”
The Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, Md. Saiful Islam, said, “The father-son conflict over land led to this fatal assault. The body has been recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Preparations for filing a case are ongoing.”
