In a shocking incident in Kalapara, Patuakhali, a housewife named Rubina Akter was allegedly attacked by members of her husband’s family, who reportedly attempted to drown her in a canal. The victim was rescued and admitted to hospital for treatment on the morning of Tuesday, 10 March.

The attack took place in Chalitabunia village under Champapur Union, in the early hours before dawn. According to Rubina, tensions had been escalating within the family for some time. “There have been repeated disputes between my husband and his family, including my father-in-law Shahid Hawladar, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and uncle-in-law. On Monday evening, my father-in-law’s brother threatened to kill my husband, Badal,” she said.

Rubina further stated that the family often blamed her for minor disagreements with her husband. “At dawn today, while stepping out of the house for ablution before sehri and Fajr prayer, four to five people came from behind, tied my mouth, forced me into a canal, and tried to drown me. I lost consciousness during the attack,” she recounted from her hospital bed.

Her husband, Badal Hawladar, corroborated her account, saying, “This was a premeditated attempt on my wife’s life, carried out by my family. We have now brought her to Barishal for advanced medical treatment.”

When contacted for comment, Rubina’s father-in-law, Shahid Hawladar, denied knowledge of the incident. “I have already transferred all my land to them. This appears to be a fabricated plot to evict me from my residence. I know nothing about any attempt on her life,” he said late on Tuesday.

Kalapara police station chief, Officer-in-Charge Robiul Islam, confirmed receipt of a written complaint regarding the matter. “We have received the formal complaint and are conducting a thorough investigation. Appropriate legal measures will be taken based on our findings,” he stated.
