At the inaugural parliamentary meeting of the BNP’s legislative wing, Prime Minister and party chairman Tarique Rahman delivered a strong advisory to party ministers and members of parliament, emphasising discipline, responsibility, and careful communication with the media. He cautioned that no member should comment beyond their designated responsibilities, highlighting the importance of coherent and measured public messaging.
The meeting took place on Wednesday, 11 March, at 11:15 am in the National Parliament building, marking the BNP’s first parliamentary gathering under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. The session commenced with a welcome address by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, followed by speeches from BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Seating arrangements positioned the Prime Minister centrally, flanked by Mirza Fakhrul and Salahuddin Ahmed on one side, and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on the other. The meeting saw participation from 209 BNP parliamentarians.
During his address, Tarique Rahman outlined ongoing and upcoming welfare initiatives, offering guidance on their effective implementation. He particularly highlighted the party’s electoral promise of the ‘Family Card’ programme, stating:
“Many have spoken about our Family Card scheme, but we began implementing our commitment even before the ink on voters’ fingers dried. This is BNP in action—the party the people want to see.”
The Prime Minister also stressed rapid rollout of the Family Card programme nationwide, alongside a comprehensive canal excavation initiative to improve drainage and sanitation. With dengue season approaching, he urged all members to take proactive measures to maintain cleanliness and public health.
Addressing the July national charter, Tarique Rahman acknowledged that some aspects faced ‘notes of dissent’ from various quarters. He affirmed that the government would proceed with actionable components. Furthermore, responsibility for electing the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament was formally entrusted to him, with elections scheduled for the commencement of the 13th parliamentary session on Thursday.
