Bangladesh’s cricket captain, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, addressed the media ahead of the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan, emphasising the importance of time and stability in leadership to build a competitive squad. While questions about his personal performance and future as captain surfaced repeatedly, Miraz focused firmly on the present, steering attention away from speculation about his tenure beyond June.

“This is my role for as long as I am entrusted with it,” Miraz explained. “I believe that whoever is given the captaincy needs time to properly shape the team. Decisions regarding the future will be taken by the cricket board. My responsibility is to guide the team to a strong position during my tenure.”

Bangladesh is embarking on a new chapter in ODIs this year, with a total of 22 matches scheduled both home and away. The team faces the dual challenge of securing a top-nine ranking to gain direct qualification for the upcoming World Cup. The first ODI will take place tomorrow at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at 2:15 pm, setting the stage for a crucial assessment of the team’s form and cohesion.

Miraz’s ODI captaincy record so far has been modest. In 13 matches, he has led the team to victory on just three occasions, including two wins in the most recent series against the West Indies. Yet he sees these experiences as motivation rather than setback, with the World Cup as the ultimate goal.

“I feel this series is extremely important—not for me personally, but for the team and for Bangladesh,” Miraz said. “Regardless of who leads the side in the future, the primary priority is the nation and ensuring a spot in the World Cup.”

Last year was largely a T20-focused period for Bangladesh. The team played ODIs intermittently, suffering a series defeat at home against Sri Lanka and a heavy loss to Afghanistan in the UAE. Miraz is now intent on laying a stronger foundation and starting a fresh chapter in ODIs.

He also underscored his commitment to supporting his teammates: “Building a team requires consistent performance from every player. As captain, it is my responsibility to stand by them. We have many talented and promising players, and my role is to support them so that their performances can strengthen the team.”

Miraz’s focus remains clear: solidify the team’s structure, nurture emerging talent, and ensure Bangladesh enters the World Cup with a competitive edge. His leadership philosophy prioritises national success over personal accolades, highlighting a disciplined, team-first approach as Bangladesh prepares for a pivotal year in ODI cricket.
