The 21st of Ramadan has repeatedly marked pivotal moments in Islamic and world history. On this day, both spiritual milestones and political triumphs have occurred, shaping the course of Muslim societies across centuries. From the tender rituals of the Prophet’s family to decisive battles and transformative political events, 21st Ramadan resonates with enduring significance.

The Aqiqah of Hasan ibn Ali (RA)

On the 7th day following his birth in 3 AH, Hasan ibn Ali (RA), grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), was celebrated with the traditional Islamic ritual of Aqiqah. The Prophet (SAW) personally performed the sacrifice on behalf of his grandson and instructed that the silver equivalent of the weight of Hasan’s hair be given in charity. This practice underscored the social responsibility towards newborns and the importance of community solidarity.

Significantly, the Prophet (SAW) named his grandson “Hasan,” breaking with pre-Islamic naming conventions of the Jahiliyyah period. This event not only commemorates the birth of a key figure in Islamic history but also serves as a profound lesson in justice, respect, and familial care.

The Passing of Osman I, Founder of the Ottoman Empire

On 21st Ramadan 726 AH (1326 CE), Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, passed away. Born in 1258 CE, the year of Baghdad’s fall, Osman transformed a small tribal principality into a formidable empire that would carry the banner of Islam for over six centuries. Remarkably, he left no material wealth except for his sword, horse, and armour, preserved today as “Osman’s Sword.”

Nur ad-Din Zengi’s Victory Against the Crusaders

In 559 AH (1164 CE), on the same date, Sultan Nur ad-Din Mahmud Zengi achieved a major military victory against a Crusader coalition at Harim, Syria. Employing brilliant tactical manoeuvres, he isolated the Crusader cavalry from their infantry, resulting in around 10,000 Crusader deaths and the capture of key lords from Tripoli and Antioch. This triumph greatly paved the way for the eventual recapture of Jerusalem.

Other Notable Events on 21st Ramadan

Sheikh Farhan al-Sader’s Execution (1356 AH / 1937 CE): The Palestinian nationalist and companion of Izzuddin al-Qassam was executed by British authorities at the age of 77 during Ramadan, becoming a symbol of sacrifice in the struggle for Arab liberation.

Passing of Imam Ibn Majah (273 AH): Renowned compiler of one of the six canonical Hadith collections, his death marked a significant loss for Islamic scholarship.

Commencement of the Suez Canal Project (1275 AH / 1859 CE): Excavation began, signalling a monumental shift in global trade and geopolitics by connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.
