Jamuna Water Levels Surge, Triggering Flood Alarms in Sirajganj

Persistent heavy downpours coupled with a massive rush of upstream hilly torrents have caused the water levels of the Jamuna River to surge rapidly in Kazipur, Sirajganj. This sudden and aggressive rise has already begun inundating low-lying areas, vast river basins, and detached island chars across the region. The abrupt deluge has reignited severe anxieties among hundreds of thousands of riverside residents, who now face the dual threats of devastating seasonal floods and severe riverbank erosion.

According to data released by the Water Development Board (WDB) control room on Monday morning, 13 July 2026, the Jamuna is swelling at an alarming velocity. The invading waters have commenced breaching domestic homesteads and agricultural lands located within the vulnerable char perimeters. Local farmers have been left entirely helpless as substantial tracts of Aman paddy seedbeds and early summer vegetable cultivation submerge beneath the rising floodwaters.

Alamgir, a resident of the newly formed Maizbari char along the Jamuna banks, shared his distress regarding the unfolding crisis. He stated that the local population is living in deep fear due to the unprecedented speed of the current deluge, noting that he had never seen the water level rise so rapidly in a single night. With crop fields already destroyed and water nearly touching the plinths of their homes, he expressed grave concern that dozens of adjoining villages would be fully submerged overnight.

Local rights activists view these recurrent floods and relentless riverbank erosion as a permanent curse for the isolated communities living along the riverbeds. Halim, a char dweller, emphasised that the simultaneous onslaught of flooding and erosion plunges thousands of families into severe humanitarian crises every year. He pointed out that while developed nations provide immediate compensation and robust rehabilitation frameworks for citizens displaced by natural disasters, affected communities in Bangladesh are often left to fend for themselves after losing all their worldly possessions. He urged the sub-district administration and relevant state agencies to deploy immediate, effective bank-protection measures and initiate relief distribution.

Assuring the public of the government’s readiness to tackle any looming emergency, Kazipur Upazila Project Implementation Officer Abdur Razzak stated that the local administration is actively monitoring the situation on the ground. He confirmed that sufficient stocks of Government Relief (GR) rice, emergency funds, and pre-packaged dry food rations have already been allocated and stored for prompt distribution across the affected unions.

Concurrently, Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman, the Executive Engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board, attributed the current crisis to heavy rainfall across the upstream Indian catchments and subsequent mountain runoff. He advised residents living in the exposed lowlands and chars to remain highly vigilant and move toward safer shelters if necessary. He added that engineering teams are maintaining strict surveillance over all vulnerable and high-risk embankments along the river grid.
