The Netherlands and Japan shared the spoils in an enthralling 2-2 draw after a quiet opening period gave way to a breathless four-goal second half. The Dutch side twice held the advantage but were ultimately denied maximum points by a resilient Japanese outfit. It was an 89th-minute strike from Daichi Kamada that salvaged a well-earned point for Japan, leaving the European side frustrated at the final whistle.
Although the first 45 minutes concluded without the deadlock being broken, the period was defined by fluent, attacking football from both contingents. The Netherlands created the most significant opening of the first half in the 34th minute. Following a well-delivered corner, forward Donyell Malen directed a powerful header towards the net, but Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a magnificent reflex save to keep the ball out. This crucial intervention was one of several vital stops by Suzuki during the opening period, ensuring that the teams entered the half-time break on level terms.
The match transformed completely following the resumption of play, with three goals scored during a frantic 13-minute window. In the 51st minute, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock by meeting a cross from the right wing with a superb header. The ball struck the post before crossing the line, marking the defender’s first-ever goal for his country at a major tournament.
The Dutch lead, however, was erased just six minutes later. Japan initiated a swift counter-offensive down the left flank, allowing Keito Nakamura to find the back of the net and equalise in the 57th minute.
The frantic pace continued, and the Netherlands recaptured the lead in the 64th minute. This time, it was Crysencio Summerville who capitalised on an attacking opportunity to restore his side’s one-goal cushion, making the scoreline 2-1.
Despite falling behind for a second time in the match, Japan refused to capitulate. During the final stages of the encounter, they mounted a series of disciplined attacks, imposing sustained pressure on the Dutch defensive line. This persistence was rewarded in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada converted an opportunity to draw Japan level once more. The final whistle blew shortly afterwards, concluding a gripping contest with both nations taking a point apiece.
