The Savar Model Thana Police have arrested local Jubo League leader Selim Reza in connection with a student homicide case filed during the anti-discrimination movement. The arrest was executed during the early hours of Monday, 8 June, during a targeted raid conducted at his residence located within the Savar municipal area.
According to law enforcement authorities, Selim Reza, an influential leader of the Savar municipal unit of the Jubo League—the youth wing of the Awami League—was wanted for his alleged involvement in the violent clashes and subsequent death of a student during the mass anti-discrimination protests. Following precise intelligence regarding his whereabouts, a detachment from the Savar Model Thana Police cordoned off his residence before dawn and apprehended him without incident.
The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) for Savar, Jahangir Alam, officially confirmed the arrest to members of the press on Monday morning. He noted that the suspect has been placed into police custody and is undergoing primary interrogation as part of the formal legal framework before being presented to the judicial court.
Police authorities revealed that Selim Reza is the latest in a series of high-profile political figures detained in the region. Over the preceding few days, law enforcement agencies have apprehended a total of five top-tier leaders and activists belonging to the Awami League and its affiliate organisations within Savar.
Every individual arrested during this recent sweep faces specific criminal charges detailed in various cases concerning murder, assault, and targeted violence perpetrated against peaceful student demonstrators during the anti-discrimination movement.
According to police intelligence dossiers, these political operatives had initially absconded and remained in hiding following the political transition in the country. However, following the political shift that saw the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assume state governance, these individuals reportedly returned to the Savar locality. Law enforcement officials stated that the suspects had re-entered the area to covertly resume political operations and were maintaining unauthorised or unlawful residencies, prompting the police to initiate tracking and arrest operations.
