Bangladesh may experience higher-than-normal temperatures and several spells of heatwaves during June, according to the latest long-range weather outlook issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The forecast suggests that many parts of the country could face warmer conditions than usual, while overall rainfall is expected to remain below the seasonal average.
The weather agency’s monthly assessment indicates that two to three episodes of mild to moderate heatwaves could affect different regions throughout June. At the same time, meteorologists expect rainfall to be lower than normal despite the fact that the preceding months of April and May recorded above-average precipitation.
The forecast report, released on Monday, noted that June is traditionally one of Bangladesh’s wettest months. On average, the country receives around 459 millimetres of rainfall during June, making it the second-rainiest month of the year after July, when average rainfall reaches approximately 523 millimetres. However, rainfall totals this year may fall short of those long-term averages.

Meteorologists also expect several low-pressure systems to develop over the region during the month. One of these systems could strengthen into a monsoon depression, potentially bringing periods of heavy rain and gusty weather to affected areas.
The weather office further stated that the southwest monsoon is likely to extend across various parts of Bangladesh from the beginning of June. Nevertheless, the broader temperature trend is expected to remain higher than normal, increasing the likelihood of uncomfortable heat conditions between rainfall episodes.
Contrast With Previous Months
The outlook comes after unusually wet conditions during April and May. April, typically regarded as the hottest month of the year in Bangladesh, recorded rainfall levels more than 75 per cent above normal, an uncommon occurrence. May also ended with above-average precipitation, registering around 7 per cent more rainfall than the climatological norm.
Regional variations were particularly noticeable during May. The northern division of Rangpur experienced the largest increase, receiving nearly 99 per cent more rainfall than usual. In contrast, the divisions of Chattogram, Khulna and Barishal recorded comparatively lower rainfall totals.
Meanwhile, heatwave conditions have already emerged at the start of June. According to meteorological observations, a mild heatwave swept across extensive parts of the country on the first day of the month. A total of 34 districts were affected, including Tangail, Faridpur, Narsingdi, Gopalganj, Mymensingh, Chandpur, Barishal and Bhola, as well as all eight districts of Rajshahi Division, all eight districts of Rangpur Division, and ten districts in Khulna Division.
Weather experts advise residents, particularly those engaged in outdoor work, to remain alert to heat-related risks as temperatures rise. Adequate hydration, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and following official weather updates will be important as Bangladesh navigates a month expected to bring both intense heat and evolving monsoon conditions.
