Police authorities in Khulna have issued strict safety guidelines restricting officers from moving alone at night following a violent mugging that left a senior detective critically injured. Signed by the Superintendent of Police for the District Special Branch (DSB), the official directive instructs all unit commanders across Rupsha, Terokhada, Dighalia, and Batiaghata police precincts to enforce buddy systems and heightened personal security protocols during night operations.
The emergency security measure follows a violent attack on 43-year-old Police Inspector Shah Alam during the early hours of Friday. Returning in plain clothes after leading an anti-crime drive in Rupsha upazila, Inspector Alam crossed the river via ferry and boarded a rickshaw toward his residence. At approximately 2:30 am, three armed muggers intercepted his rickshaw along Khanjahan Ali Road in front of Khulna Collegiate Girls’ School.
When Inspector Alam attempted to resist the muggers as they demanded his mobile phones and wallet, the assailants produced heavy cleavers and struck both his wrists repeatedly, inflicting severe deep lacerations before fleeing the scene. Rescuing officers initially rushed him to a local facility before transferring him in critical condition to a private hospital in Dhaka, where he remains under intensive medical care.
Khulna Superintendent of Police Sarkar Omar Farooq clarified that the internal order aims to safeguard operational personnel amidst heightened local crime rates. The directive coincides with a major law enforcement crackdown launched earlier in the week to recover illegal arms and detain violent offenders across Khulna district.
The security crackdown was initiated following a series of execution-style shootings in the region. On Monday, gunmen shot and killed Akhtar Dhali in Rupsha, six weeks after his son, Joy Dhali, was murdered in a similar fashion. On the same day, another victim was shot dead inside a tea stall in the Formaishkhana area of Dighalia. Authorities stressed that while special operations will proceed at full force to apprehend those responsible, the new safety directives are vital to prevent further targeted ambushes on off-duty personnel.
