Man and Woman Arrested in Dhaka Following Highway Shooting Incident

Law enforcement agencies have arrested a young man and woman in Dhaka’s Gulshan area following a high-profile shooting incident outside the Bhanga Highway Police Station in Faridpur. The arrests, executed late on Tuesday night, 15 September, follow a month-long investigation into the violent altercation along the Dhaka-Khulna Highway.
A joint operational team comprising officers from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Bhanga Police Station conducted the midnight raid before transferring the suspects to the RAB-1 headquarters. On Wednesday afternoon, 16 September, police formally showed the duo arrested in connection with a case filed at Bhanga Police Station and initiated weapon recovery drives across Dhaka and Munshiganj.
The incident occurred late on Monday night, 17 August, at approximately 11:30 pm. According to eyewitnesses and case documents, the suspects were travelling from Dhaka towards Gopalganj in a private car when they stopped outside the Bhanga Highway Police Station to buy tea. A dispute erupted when local bystanders asked the driver to move the vehicle to the side of the road to clear the thoroughfare.
The alteration escalated rapidly. The young man returned to the vehicle, produced a handgun, and discharged multiple rounds into the air in full public view. The sudden gunfire triggered widespread panic among bystanders, resulting in a chaotic rush in which two people sustained injuries. The occupants then sped off towards the Khulna route.
Video footage of the public shooting quickly circulated across social media platforms and featured prominently in national news broadcasts, sparking widespread public concern over highway security. In response, Bhanga Police Station Sub-Inspector Prashanta Kumar filed an official case on 18 August, with Sub-Inspector Mizanoor Rahman appointed as the lead investigating officer.
Addressing the progress of the investigation, Sub-Inspector Mizanoor Rahman confirmed that tracking technology helped locate the suspects in Gulshan. Investigating teams accompanied the detainees to potential locations in Dhaka and Munshiganj to recover the firearm used in the crime. Following the recovery drives and further questioning, authorities plan to present both individuals before the court on Thursday to seek remand or court orders for judicial custody.
