A violent domestic altercation fueled by a suspected drug addiction has left a mother and her younger son hospitalised in Rajshahi. The incident unfolded late Saturday night in the Meherchandi Uttarpara area under Chandrima Thana, prompting swift intervention by local law enforcement and residents.
The suspect, 34-year-old Mehedi Hasan, also known as Munna, allegedly attacked his 55-year-old mother, Monowara Khatun, and his 28-year-old brother, Mridul, using a sharp kitchen cleaver known locally as a boti. According to police and neighbourhood accounts, the assault was triggered by a dispute over money to purchase narcotics.
As the situation escalated, neighbours rushed to the scene and intervened, administering a beating to the suspect before police arrived. Chandrima Thana officers forced open the door to the residence to rescue the injured family members. All three individuals—the two victims and the alleged attacker—were immediately transported to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Medical staff admitted Mridul and Mehedi to Ward 8, while Monowara Khatun was placed in Ward 2 for urgent treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that all three remain under medical care, addressing persistent unverified social media rumors regarding fatalities. Police explicitly clarified that neither the mother nor the brother had died from their injuries, urging the public to refrain from circulating unverified reports online.
Following the attack, Monowara’s daughter lodged a formal complaint at Chandrima Police Station. Officers formally arrested Mehedi in connection with the case and seized the weapon used in the assault. Investigators noted that the suspect has a history of severe substance abuse, which appears to be the primary catalyst for the violence, though a broader inquiry into the circumstances is underway.
Deputy Commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and media spokesperson, Md Gaziur Rahman, confirmed the sequence of events and the subsequent arrests. Police stated that once the injured suspect completes his hospital treatment, he will be produced before a local court to face formal legal proceedings.
