Debt Dispute Turns Fatal as Nephew Kills Aunt in Mymensingh

A domestic dispute over a small unpaid debt has ended in tragedy in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria upazila, where a woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her teenage nephew.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening (14 April) in Koiyarchala village under Bakta Union. The victim has been identified as Ayesha Khatun, 40, wife of Taraa Mia. Police confirmed that the accused, 18-year-old Touhid Hossain, is the son of the victim’s brother-in-law Lal Mia.

Dispute Over Tk 10 Escalates Into Violence

According to police and local residents, the fatal incident originated from a seemingly trivial dispute involving Tk 10 owed between children in the household. What began as an argument between minors quickly escalated into a confrontation among adults, ultimately spiralling out of control.

Eyewitnesses said tensions rose rapidly following a heated exchange of words. At one point, Touhid Hossain allegedly became involved in the altercation and, in a sudden outburst of violence, attacked his aunt with a sharp knife.

The victim was reportedly stabbed multiple times inside her home. She died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.

Residents of the area described the incident as shocking and deeply distressing, noting that the family had no known history of serious conflict prior to the dispute.

Police Action and Arrest

Police from Fulbaria Police Station swiftly responded to the incident after being informed by local residents. The accused was apprehended from the scene shortly after the attack without resistance.

Officer-in-Charge Saifullah Saif confirmed the arrest and said legal proceedings had been initiated.

“The accused has been taken into custody. Necessary legal steps are underway,” he stated, adding that further investigation is in progress to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the killing.

Shock and Mourning in the Village

The brutal nature of the killing has left the local community in shock. Residents said that the dispute appeared to have escalated unexpectedly, turning a minor financial disagreement into a deadly confrontation within moments.

Neighbours expressed disbelief that such a trivial amount of money could lead to a fatal outcome, particularly within an extended family setting.

Investigation Underway

Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether any prior tensions existed between the families and what prompted the sudden escalation of violence.

Authorities are also recording statements from witnesses and family members to establish a clearer picture of the events.

The body of the deceased is expected to be sent for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure.

Rising Concern Over Domestic Violence

The incident adds to growing concerns about the rise in domestic and interpersonal violence in rural areas, where disputes—sometimes over extremely small sums of money—have increasingly escalated into serious criminal acts.

Law enforcement officials have reiterated calls for community-level dispute resolution mechanisms and greater awareness to prevent minor conflicts from turning violent.

As investigations continue, authorities have assured that the case will be dealt with under the full provisions of the law.
