Man Assaulted By In-Laws Over Unpaid Debts

An expatriate worker has been subjected to severe physical abuse by his in-laws after attempting to recover borrowed funds and land purchased with his foreign earnings. The victim was restrained with chains and tied to a coconut tree before being assaulted. Following the incident, local law enforcement authorities intervened, rescuing the victim and apprehending one of the primary suspects, identified as the victim’s uncle-in-law, Asad Ali.

Marital Background and Financial Disagreements

The victim, identified as Sorhab Hossain Babu, is the son of the late Abdul Khalek and hails from Raghunathpur village within the Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore district. He was married to Morium Khatun (also referred to as Morium Begum), the daughter of Mohar Uddin, a resident of Badlakura village situated in the Noyabil union of Nalitabari upazila.

According to verified family records and local council logs, Sorhab Hossain spent approximately 17 years working abroad as an expatriate laborer. Throughout his period of overseas employment, he remitted various sums of money to his father-in-law, Mohar Uddin, for the specific purpose of purchasing land and constructing a residential property. These transactions included a primary loan of 650,000 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) specifically earmarked for property procurement, followed by a subsequent supplementary payment of 150,000 BDT. The cumulative sum deferred to the father-in-law amounted to 800,000 BDT.

The Altercation and Tree Chaining Incident

The financial disagreement escalated into physical violence on Thursday afternoon, 18 June 2026, when Sorhab Hossain visited his father-in-law’s homestead in Badlakura village to demand the full restitution of the borrowed capital and to take formal possession of the acquired land. A heated verbal altercation broke out between Sorhab Hossain and his father-in-law, Mohar Uddin, which rapidly degenerated into a physical scuffle.

Following the initial confrontation, members of the father-in-law’s family outnumbered and detained Sorhab Hossain. The in-laws extracted iron chains, bound the expatriate worker securely to a coconut tree located within the household compound, and proceeded to execute a coordinated physical assault on him.

Upon receiving emergency notifications regarding the unlawful confinement and active assault, a deployment team from the Nalitabari Police Station rushed to the specified location in Badlakura village. The police officers successfully cut the chains, rescued Sorhab Hossain from his captors, and immediately transported him to the Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, where he was admitted to receive emergency medical treatment for his bodily injuries.

Local Governance Verification and Police Interventions

The Chairman of the Noyabil Union Parishad, Mizanur Rahman, formally validated the systemic background of the economic dispute. The local government chairman confirmed that Mohar Uddin had indeed accepted substantial funds from his expatriate son-in-law under the pretext of constructing a family residence.

Financial Overview Transacted Amount (BDT) Stated Purpose of Fund Transfer
Primary Loan BDT 650,000 Allocation for localized land procurement.
Secondary Capital BDT 150,000 Supplementary funds for domestic housing construction.
Total Debt BDT 800,000 Cumulative outstanding liability of the father-in-law.

Chairman Mizanur Rahman stated that after facing prolonged non-repayment, the son-in-law had previously filed a formal written complaint with the Union Parishad office seeking municipal arbitration. The council administration issued multiple administrative summons to the father-in-law’s family to participate in a mediated settlement meeting; however, the accused family consistently ignored the institutional directives. The chairman subsequently alerted civil administrative authorities upon learning of the assault, leading to swift executive action.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalitabari Police Station, Ashrafuzzaman, confirmed that the victim’s wife, Morium Begum, aligned with her husband and filed a formal criminal lawsuit against her father and other complicit relatives on Friday morning, 19 June 2026. The OC specified that law enforcement operations had already resulted in the successful tracking and arrest of one co-accused uncle-in-law, Asad Ali. Dedicated police teams are conducting continuous raids to locate and apprehend the remaining fleeing suspects, including the principal accused, Mohar Uddin.
