A 40-year-old day labourer has died following an electrocution incident while carrying out roofing work in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district, Bangladesh.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 am on Sunday (3 May) in the Clubpara area of Saharbaty village. The deceased, Enamul Haque, was the son of the late Nojer Ali from the same village. Another individual, Monowara Khatun, sustained injuries while attempting to assist during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Gangni Upazila Health Complex.
According to local accounts, Enamul Haque was engaged in installing a tin roof on a shop located within a local market in the Clubpara area. During the work, the tin sheets came into contact with an overhead electrical wire passing above the structure. This contact resulted in Enamul being electrocuted. He suffered serious injuries and fell from the working position.
Immediately after the incident, local residents rescued him and transported him to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex. However, attending medical personnel on duty declared him dead upon arrival. During the rescue attempt, Monowara Khatun also came into contact with electricity and was injured. She has since been admitted to the same hospital for treatment.
Police from Gangni Police Station responded to the incident after being informed. Officer-in-Charge Al Mamun confirmed that law enforcement visited the scene and conducted an initial inspection. He also stated that necessary legal procedures are currently underway in connection with the death.
The incident has caused concern among local residents, particularly regarding safety measures during construction and maintenance work near live electrical lines. The presence of overhead wires close to work sites has been identified as a contributing factor in the accident based on initial local descriptions.
