A man identified as Rajib Hossain, aged 40, was killed after being beaten by local residents following allegations of burglary in Singair Upazila of Manikganj District. The incident occurred on Sunday night in Bandail Jianagar village under Shyesta Union. During the same episode, another individual sustained injuries amid a struggle with the alleged burglary group.
According to the victim’s family and local sources, a group of six to seven individuals armed with locally made sharp weapons entered the residence of Hakim Ali at approximately 2:00 am. The assailants reportedly broke the iron grille of a window on the northern side of the house and gained entry into the premises. Once inside, they allegedly threatened the household and carried out a robbery.
It is alleged that Rajib Hossain, who was part of the group, collected cash and gold ornaments from inside the house and handed them to accomplices positioned outside. During the incident, the house owner attempted to apprehend him, leading to a physical struggle between them. The confrontation drew the attention of nearby residents after the house owner called for help.
Local residents rushed to the scene following the alarm and managed to detain Rajib Hossain. He was subsequently beaten by an agitated crowd and died at the scene.
During the struggle, the house owner, Hakim Ali, sustained head injuries. He was initially admitted to Singair Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for advanced treatment, where he remains under medical care.
Hakim Ali’s elder brother, Hukum Ali, stated that approximately four lakh Bangladeshi taka in cash and around four bhori of gold ornaments were taken during the incident. He also confirmed that one alleged member of the group was detained during the episode before being assaulted by locals.
Law enforcement officials from Singair Police Station responded to the incident following notification. The body of the deceased was recovered early Monday morning and sent to Manikganj District Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Police have indicated that a case is being prepared in connection with the death.
Authorities also noted that, based on preliminary findings, the incident may have involved theft rather than a fully organised armed robbery, although the investigation is ongoing.
