Modern football is increasingly embracing technology, and French superstar Kylian Mbappé is adapting swiftly to this new era. The Real Madrid forward has begun using the Meta Vanguard smart glasses, equipped with artificial intelligence, during training sessions, allowing him to analyse even the smallest aspects of his performance in real time.
Developed jointly by Meta and Oakley, the Vanguard glasses feature Oakley Prism lenses that enhance field vision, a 12-megapixel hands-free camera capable of recording video in 3K resolution, and an open-ear speaker system. Every sprint, dribble, and shot is captured and can be immediately analysed, offering invaluable insights for an elite athlete.
Connected to performance platforms like Garmin or Strava, the glasses provide instant metrics, including speed, movement angles, stride rhythm, and foot placement. This data allows Mbappé to make precise adjustments to his technique during or after training sessions.
Speaking to Brobai Bel, Mbappé said, “As a competitive athlete, I’m always searching for an edge. What Meta and Oakley have created is exceptional – it takes technology and training to a new level.” He added, “The key is improvement without losing focus on the game. This technology maintains that balance.”
Mbappé’s current form for the national team mirrors this precision. In France’s 4–0 win over Ukraine, he scored twice, extending his streak to six consecutive international matches with a goal, just shy of French legend Jean-Pierre Papin’s record of seven. Despite a demanding schedule, including a 12-hour travel to Azerbaijan shortly after the match, Mbappé remains confident. “This is the most talented French team I have ever seen. Our potential is limitless. In strength, we are not yet at the level of the 2018 or 2022 squads, but we are 100% capable of reaching it,” he said.
