Measles Surge Intensifies in Mymensingh Hospital

A continuing rise in suspected measles cases among children has placed increasing pressure on the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh, where dozens of new patients were admitted within the past 24 hours.

Between 8:00 am on Monday and 8:00 am on Tuesday, a further 33 children exhibiting measles-like symptoms were admitted to the hospital’s dedicated isolation unit. Health officials confirmed that 85 children are currently receiving treatment.

Hospital authorities reported that since 17 March, a total of 685 children with suspected measles symptoms have been admitted. Of these, 585 have recovered and been discharged, while 15 deaths have been recorded. In the latest 24-hour period alone, 28 children were discharged following recovery, indicating both ongoing admissions and steady clinical throughput within the facility.

The hospital’s isolation ward, which has a capacity of 64 beds, has been operating beyond its intended limit due to the sustained influx of patients. To manage the situation, authorities have deployed three separate medical teams dedicated to treating and monitoring affected children.

Officials noted that isolated cases began appearing in early February, initially involving one or two children. However, from mid-March onwards, the number of suspected infections began to rise sharply, suggesting a developing outbreak pattern that has since persisted.

Importantly, no deaths were recorded in the most recent 24-hour reporting period, offering a brief sign of stabilisation amid what remains a concerning public health situation.

Key Figures at a Glance

Indicator Figure
New admissions (last 24 hours) 33 children
Current patients under treatment 85 children
Total admissions since 17 March 685 children
Total discharges 585 children
Deaths recorded 15 children
Discharges in last 24 hours 28 children
Isolation ward capacity 64 beds

Medical staff continue to monitor patients closely, particularly given the high transmissibility of measles among unvaccinated children. Hospital administrators have reiterated the importance of early detection, timely referral, and adherence to infection control protocols within both healthcare facilities and the wider community.

While the immediate clinical workload remains significant, the steady number of recoveries suggests that with appropriate care, many affected children are responding positively to treatment. However, the sustained admission rate indicates that the outbreak has not yet fully subsided, and continued vigilance is being urged.
