Iran has carried out the death sentence of a man identified as Amir Ali Mirzafari following his conviction in connection with arson attacks on mosques during a period of anti-government unrest. According to Tehran’s official position, Mirzafari was found to have acted as an intelligence operative for Israel.
The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the sentence was implemented on Tuesday (21 April) at dawn, following confirmation by Iran’s Supreme Court. Authorities stated that the judicial process had concluded with final approval at the highest level of the country’s judiciary before the execution was carried out.
Mirzafari was accused of attempting to set fire to the Kolahak Jame Mosque in Tehran and of participating in a wider network allegedly linked to Israel’s intelligence service, Mossad. Iranian authorities further claimed that he was involved in coordinated activities during unrest, which included arson, attacks on property, and assaults on security personnel.
During judicial proceedings, he is reported to have confessed to involvement in acts of arson and participation in unrest-related activities, including damage to property and confrontation with security forces. The Iranian authorities also maintained that these actions formed part of organised efforts connected to what they described as hostile foreign intelligence operations.
In a separate development reported alongside the execution, Iranian judicial authorities stated that 22 additional individuals were sentenced across two provinces. They were convicted on charges described as “cooperation with the enemy”. The sentences handed down to these individuals reportedly varied in length, depending on the specific charges established in each case.
No further official breakdown of the identities of these individuals, their specific sentences, or detailed locations within the provinces was provided in the report cited by Tasnim News Agency.
