In a commanding display of skill and strategy, MI Emirates cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, with Kamindu Mendis and Fazalhaq Farooqi spearheading the charge. The Knight Riders’ innings imploded under pressure, posting just 122 in the 20th over, a target that Emirates chased with ease in the 14th over.
The match started with an aggressive bowling attack from MI Emirates. Farooqi and Romario Shepherd immediately put the Knight Riders on the back foot, dismissing top-order batsmen Phil Salt and Alex Hales inside the PowerPlay. By the fourth over, Abu Dhabi were struggling at 25 for 2, signalling early trouble.
Mendis then took centre stage during the middle overs. The Sri Lankan spinner wreaked havoc, reducing the Knight Riders from 49 for 2 in the eighth over to 74 for 5 by the 11th over. His victims included Brandon McMullen, Liam Livingstone, and Sherfane Rutherford, all bowled or trapped in front. The damage Mendis inflicted left the Knight Riders’ hopes hanging by a thread.
Abu Dhabi tried to recover through Alishan Sharfu and Sunil Narine, who put together a brief partnership that nudged the total past the 100-run mark. For a moment, it seemed they could post a challenging total. However, Farooqi returned with precision and ruthlessness, taking the wickets of Sharfu, Jason Holder, Kharry Pierre, and Ajay Kumar, while Zahoor Khan wrapped up Narine, leaving the Knight Riders tottering at 122.
Chasing the target, MI Emirates got off to a flying start. Muhammad Waseem and Jonny Bairstow combined for a 33-run opening partnership by the fourth over. Even though Ajay dismissed Waseem and Holder accounted for Nicholas Pooran, a 64-run partnership between Tom Banton and Bairstow effectively sealed the outcome.
By the 13th over, MI Emirates needed just 13 runs, and Mendis stepped up to hit a decisive six off Olly Stone, sealing the seven-wicket victory. This match highlighted the duo’s dominance: Mendis’ spin wizardry and Farooqi’s lethal death bowling ensured MI Emirates’ smooth progression.
