On the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, French football legend and former UEFA President Michel Platini has initiated formal legal action against football’s global governing body, FIFA, and its current president, Gianni Infantino. A criminal complaint was officially lodged by Platini’s legal counsel in Paris on Monday.
Platini alleges that a coordinated conspiracy was orchestrated in 2015 to deliberately exclude him from the FIFA presidential race. According to the complaint, false allegations were manufactured and illicit influence was exercised to tarnish his professional reputation, effectively preventing him from attaining the highest office in global football administration.
The criminal filing specifically names Infantino alongside five other officials associated with the Swiss judiciary and Swiss football administration. Sources close to the former UEFA chief have indicated that, in tandem with the criminal proceedings, preparations are underway to file a civil lawsuit against FIFA to seek financial damages. This follows a similar course of action in 2022, when Platini raised comparable allegations against the Swiss authorities.
Prior to his election as FIFA President in 2016, Infantino worked under Platini at UEFA for a substantial period. During that era, Platini was widely considered the frontrunner to succeed Sepp Blatter as the head of FIFA.
However, his presidential ambitions were derailed in 2015 following transparency concerns regarding a payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($\text{CHF } 2,000,000$) made to him by Blatter. This transaction triggered an extensive investigation by Swiss authorities, leading to bans from football administration for both individuals. Following prolonged legal proceedings, both Platini and Blatter were formally acquitted of all corruption charges by a Swiss court in 2022, a verdict that was subsequently upheld upon appeal.
The current criminal complaint filed in Paris targets several high-profile figures who held pivotal administrative and judicial roles during the initial 2015 investigation. The identified individuals include:
