Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures 24 in Khulna

A serious road traffic accident involving a fuel-laden truck, a passenger bus, and a college transport bus left 24 people injured in Fultala upazila of Khulna on Wednesday morning (17 June). The collision occurred in the Jugnipasha area, causing major disruption to traffic and prompting a swift emergency response from local residents and authorities.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident began when a truck carrying fuel oil, travelling from Jessore towards Khulna, suddenly suffered a tyre blowout. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a passenger bus operated by Rupa Paribahan, en route to Jessore. In a chain reaction, a third vehicle—a bus carrying students from Khulna Government BL College—attempted to avoid the crashing vehicles but ended up striking the rear of the fuel truck.

The impact left all three vehicles severely damaged and resulted in panic among passengers and commuters in the vicinity. Local residents immediately rushed to the scene and assisted in rescue efforts before emergency services arrived.

Medical response and casualties

Of the 24 injured individuals, eight were initially taken to Fultala Upazila Health Complex, while 16 others were admitted to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex in Jessore. Due to the severity of their conditions, the eight patients from Fultala were later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) for advanced treatment. Medical officials confirmed that several of the injured remain in serious condition.

Authorities stated that additional injured passengers were treated at local health facilities, though their identities have not yet been fully disclosed.

Traffic disruption and response

The accident caused a significant traffic gridlock along the busy highway, with long queues of vehicles forming on both sides of the road. Commuters were stranded for an extended period until police teams arrived and cleared the wreckage. The damaged vehicles were eventually removed, allowing traffic flow to return to normal later in the day.

Fultala Police Station Officer-in-Charge M M Touhid confirmed the incident, stating that a total of 24 people were injured in the three-vehicle collision. He added that while the road has since been reopened, investigations are ongoing to determine further details and assess accountability.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety standards, vehicle maintenance, and emergency preparedness on major inter-district highways in the region.
