A local political leader in Rajshahi’s Mohonpur upazila has died in hospital after being brutally hacked during a dispute over irrigation water, with the alleged attacker subsequently filing a complaint against the victim at a police station before going into hiding.

The deceased, Kamrul Hasan Mithu (40), served as the general secretary of the Krishak League’s Jahanabad Union unit. He was a resident of Korisha Durgapur village in Mohonpur. He succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Saturday night at around 9:30 pm.

Police have confirmed that the individual who initially lodged a complaint at Mohonpur Police Station against the victim is now the prime suspect in the murder case.

Dispute over irrigation triggers violence

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon while Kamrul Hasan was irrigating his agricultural land using a plastic water pipe. During the process, the pipe reportedly burst, causing water to flow into a nearby onion field belonging to the accused, Saddam (28).

Saddam, who is also from the same village and is reportedly the nephew of the deceased, allegedly became enraged over the incident. In a sudden escalation of the dispute, he attacked Kamrul with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rushed to the scene following the attack and transported the injured man to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he remained under treatment until he died later that evening.

Accused filed complaint before fleeing

In a highly unusual turn of events, police said Saddam visited Mohonpur Police Station on Saturday evening and submitted a written complaint against Kamrul Hasan, alleging that he had been assaulted.

Sub-Inspector Yamin Ali of Mohonpur Police Station confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the accused had also shown injuries on his head while filing the complaint.

However, just hours after lodging the complaint, news of Kamrul’s death reached authorities, prompting the case to be reclassified as a murder investigation.

Police have since launched a manhunt to apprehend Saddam, who is currently absconding and cannot be traced in the local area.

Police statement and legal proceedings

Sub-Inspector Yamin Ali said that a murder case will be formally filed against Saddam following the victim’s death.

He added that legal procedures are underway and that the body of Kamrul Hasan will be subjected to an autopsy at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue before being handed over to his family.

Authorities also noted that the case will be investigated thoroughly, particularly given the familial relationship between the victim and the accused, which has added further complexity to the incident.
