A family dispute over smoking escalated into a brutal homicide on Thursday morning in Rajshahi’s Paba upazila, leaving a fifty-year-old man dead.
The victim, identified as Idris Ali, was attacked and severely wounded in the Baghichapara area of Dadhpur village. Local authorities and police sources report that the fatal altercation stemmed from a domestic disagreement in an agricultural field earlier that morning.
The trouble began when a local youth was smoking a bidi in the presence of his father. An argument quickly broke out between the father and son over the habit. Soon, tensions spilled over as Idris Ali became involved in the dispute, prompting his nephew, Afzal Hossain, to intervene on behalf of the younger relative.
What started as a heated verbal exchange rapidly deteriorated into physical violence. In a sudden escalation, Afzal Hossain allegedly grabbed a sharp agricultural cleaver, locally known as a hansua, and struck his uncle. The blade inflicted a devastating wound to one of Idris Ali’s thighs, severing vital tissue and causing massive blood loss.
Shocked bystanders and local residents rushed to the scene, administering emergency aid before transporting the critically injured man toward Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. However, the severity of the trauma proved fatal, and Idris Ali succumbed to his injuries from excessive bleeding while still in transit.
Upon arrival at the medical facility, attending physicians formally pronounced him dead. His body was subsequently transferred to the hospital morgue to await a post-mortem examination.
Law enforcement officials moved quickly to secure the area and handle the aftermath of the tragedy. Deputy Commissioner of Media for the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Md. Gaziur Rahman, confirmed the details of the incident. He noted that the primary suspect, Afzal Hossain, sustained injuries during the confrontation as well. The accused is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard in ward number eight of the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Police confirm that preparations are actively underway to file a formal murder charge at the local police station as the investigation proceeds.
