Union Parishad Chairman Accused of Rape and Fraud in Gaibandha

A primary school assistant teacher has initiated legal action against Rabiul Islam, chairman of the Rasulpur Union Parishad in Gaibandha’s Sadullapur upazila, leveling serious allegations of rape, marriage fraud, and financial extortion.

AKM Habibur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Sadullapur police station, confirmed the formal registration of the case on Wednesday evening.

According to details outlined in the initial police complaint, the professional relationship between the two began when Chairman Islam assumed the role of president of the school managing committee. Over time, this acquaintance evolved into a closer personal dynamic. The plaintiff alleges that the local leader exploited the relationship by promising marriage, subsequently engaging in multiple instances of non-consensual physical intimacy under false pretences. When pressed to formalise the union, the chairman allegedly began evading the commitment through various pretexts.

The accusations extend further to include complicity by an associate named Salehin Akand. The complaint states that Akand secretly captured intimate photographs of the teacher and used them for blackmail, threatening to distribute manipulated images publicly. Additionally, the accused allegedly coerced the teacher into signing blank non-judicial stamp paper worth three hundred takas and extracted three hundred thousand takas under the guise of covering marriage expenses, funds which the victim reportedly secured through a bank loan.

The complainant revealed that she took the drastic step of dissolving her previous marriage—from which she has two children—relying entirely on the chairman’s solemn promises of marriage. Realising she had been systematically deceived, she initially approached local police. Following initial resistance in filing the complaint, she sought justice through the courts on 16 August. After conducting a preliminary hearing, the court directed the local police station to register the petition as a formal criminal case.

Meanwhile, following the public emergence of these allegations, Chairman Rabiul Islam convened a press conference to vehemently deny any wrongdoing. He proclaimed his innocence, dismissing the entire legal action as a malicious and motivated conspiracy orchestrated to damage his reputation.

Police officials have initiated active measures in response to the court order. Officer-in-Charge AKM Habibur Rahman confirmed that a formal case encompassing charges of rape and fraud has been recorded, and law enforcement teams are conducting targeted raids to apprehend the suspects. Concurrently, medical examination procedures for the victim are underway as the investigation proceeds.
