The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has confirmed that the identity of the next head coach for the senior men’s national team will be finalised within the next three days. This announcement marks the conclusion of an extensive global search to fill the vacancy left by the departure of the previous manager, whose tenure recently reached its conclusion.
Following a meeting of the BFF National Team Committee held on Monday afternoon at the Fortis Ground in Beraid, Dhaka, committee member Amirul Islam Babu provided an update on the recruitment progress. He revealed that the federation has successfully narrowed down a massive influx of applications to a final shortlist of ten candidates.
The committee plans to conduct rigorous interviews with these ten individuals over the next three consecutive days. “Within the next three days, we will confirm our selection for the coaching position,” Mr Babu informed the press. “We will be engaging in discussions with these ten shortlisted candidates over the following three days. After these consultations, we will finalise a single name.”
The vacancy arose following the expiration of Javier Cabrera’s four-year contract last month. The search attracted unprecedented international interest; although the official deadline for applications was 30 April, nearly 300 coaches from across the globe expressed interest in the role. The BFF’s primary screening committee initially reduced this number to a preliminary shortlist of 22, which has today been further refined to the top ten prospects.
In evaluating the potential candidates, the National Team Committee has prioritised specific technical and professional qualifications to ensure the chosen individual can meet the rigorous demands of international football. The primary benchmarks for selection include:
AFC/UEFA Pro-Licence Certification: A non-negotiable requirement for senior-level international management.
Extensive International Experience: Proven success in managing national or high-level club sides.
Technical Proficiency: A demonstrated ability to implement tactical systems suitable for the current squad’s profile.
Addressing questions regarding the support staff, particularly the goalkeeping coach, Mr Babu clarified that the priority remains the appointment of the head coach first. “We are prioritising the head coach selection,” he stated. “Once appointed, we will consult with him regarding his preferred coaching panel. If he has a specific preference for a goalkeeping coach or a fitness coach, we will give that preference due consideration.”
The urgency of the appointment is underscored by a busy competitive schedule awaiting the national side. In June, Bangladesh is set to participate in a four-nation invitational tournament held in the Maldives. Concurrently, the national team has scheduled an international friendly match against San Marino.
Initially, the BFF had considered sending the Under-23 squad to the tournament in the Maldives. However, following a formal request from the Maldivian football authorities to ensure the highest level of competition, the BFF has agreed to deploy the senior national team instead. Consequently, the federation is in the process of forming two separate national team contingents to manage the overlapping international fixtures effectively.
The newly appointed head coach will be expected to take immediate charge of the squad to begin preparations for these June encounters. This selection process is viewed as a critical step for the BFF as it seeks to improve Bangladesh’s standing in international football rankings and build upon the foundations laid during the previous four-year cycle. The final decision, expected by Thursday, will define the technical direction of the national team for the foreseeable future.
