Neymar Handed Two-Match Ban for Covering Mouth During On-Field Clash

Brazilian football star Neymar Jr has been handed a two-match suspension by the country’s sports justice tribunal after covering his mouth during a heated altercation with an opponent. The ruling against the 34-year-old Santos captain was officially delivered on Wednesday by Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), adding a fresh chapter of controversy to the forward’s return to domestic football.
The disciplinary action stems from a tempestuous 1-1 draw between Santos and Bahia in the Brazilian Série A on Saturday. During the match, Neymar became embroiled in an intense verbal confrontation with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor, an exchange that culminated in the referee showing the former Brazil captain a direct red card. According to the official match report, the situation escalated further after the dismissal. Neymar charged aggressively towards the opposition bench in an attempt to confront Nestor once again, requiring several of his Santos team-mates to physically restrain him before he was eventually ushered off the pitch.
Following a formal review of match footage and referee observations, tribunal judges determined that Neymar had breached specific conduct guidelines designed to eliminate undetected verbal misconduct during matches. The rule, widely known across South American football as the ‘Vinícius Júnior Rule’, explicitly forbids players from covering their mouths with their hands or shirts while arguing with opponents or match officials. Established to prevent players from hurling racist slurs, abusive language, or unsporting taunts without being caught by lip-readers or broadcast cameras, the mandate treats mouth-covering during altercations as a severe breach of professional decorum.
The tribunal’s sanction delivers a significant blow to Santos, compounding an existing suspension for their star player. Neymar was already ineligible to participate in Wednesday’s league fixture against Palmeiras after accumulating three yellow cards. With the tribunal imposing a further two-game ban, the attacker will now be forced to sit out Santos’s next three competitive matches, leaving his side without their primary playmaker during a crucial stretch of the domestic campaign.
Both Neymar and Santos retain the right to lodge a formal appeal against the STJD’s verdict. The club’s legal team is expected to challenge the severity of the sanction in an effort to reduce the suspension or obtain a temporary stay of execution. Should the original ruling stand without modification, the veteran forward is unlikely to feature again for Santos until late November, depending on the tribunal’s scheduling and appeal deliberations.
