One Dead and One Critical After Mob Lynching in Joypurhat

Tragedy struck the Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat district on Saturday morning after two local youths were subjected to severe physical torture under the suspicion of theft, leaving one dead and another fighting for his life. The incident occurred in the Mohabbatpur Padmapukur area under Mahmudpur Union, creating widespread panic and outrage across the region.

The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Lal Badsha, son of Jamal Hossain, hailing from Alampur Adarsha village under Alampur Union. His close friend, 18-year-old Maidul, son of Ibrahim Hossain from the same village, survived the brutal assault with critical injuries.

According to police sources and local residents, passers-by spotted the two young men lying unconscious beside a road near a field in the Mohabbatpur Padmapukur area early on Saturday morning, 15 August. Concerned locals immediately alerted the Khetlal Police Station. A police team responded promptly to the scene, where they recovered Lal Badsha’s body and rescued Maidul in a precarious physical state. Officers rushed Maidul to the Khetlal Upazila Health Complex, where he received emergency medical care before being shifted for advanced treatment.

Speaking from his hospital bed, a traumatised Maidul recounted the harrowing ordeal. He alleged that a group of men lured the two friends from the Jamalganj Charmatha area and forcibly confined them in an isolated house. Once trapped inside, the captors beat them indiscriminately, subjecting them to inhuman torture over an extended period. When both teenagers lost consciousness from the relentless physical violence, the attackers dumped their bodies in an open field near the roadside and fled the scene.

Muktarul Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khetlal Police Station, confirmed the casualty and the recovery of the victims. Preliminary police inquiries indicate that the fatal assault stemmed from unverified suspicions of theft. However, law enforcement officials emphasized that investigators are keeping an open mind and actively exploring all potential motives behind the targeted violence.

Police have dispatched Lal Badsha’s body to the morgue at the 400-bed Joypurhat General Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, law enforcement teams have launched targeted raids across the district to identify and apprehend every individual involved in the crime. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway as authorities work to restore calm in the area.
