A 35-year-old man was killed and another sustained severe injuries during a stabbing incident in the Patiya upazila of Chattogram on Tuesday evening. The violent encounter took place in the Joulur Dighi West Paad area, prompting local residents to intercept and detain a fleeing suspect who was subsequently handed over to law enforcement.
The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Sheel, 35, a resident of Chakrashala village within the Kachuai union of Patiya, and the son of Milan Sheel. The surviving victim, Tilak Chakraborty, 35, son of Durgapada Chakraborty, hails from the same village and remains hospitalised.
Local sources, relaying statements made by the injured Mr Chakraborty, reported that the two men were walking back to their village from the local Kamalmunshir Hat market at approximately 8:00 pm. As they reached the western embankment of Joulur Dighi, they observed three individuals standing in the darkness along the rural road. Critically, one member of the stationary group was disguised in a traditional burqa.
To ascertain who was standing in the unlit area, Mr Sheel and Mr Chakraborty illuminated the figures using a handheld torchlight. The individuals immediately drew weapons and stabbed both men. Hearing the victims’ screams, local residents rushed towards the location, causing the three attackers to flee the scene.
The local community members evacuated both casualties to the Patiya Upazila Health Complex. Recognising their critical state, the attending medical officers administered emergency first aid before transferring both patients to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Mr Sheel succumbed to his stab wounds while undergoing emergency treatment later that night.
In the aftermath of the assault, an angry mob of residents pursued the perpetrators, managing to apprehend one individual suspected of participating in the attack. The captured man was identified as 35-year-old Abidul Islam, originally from the Gaibandha district. He was subjected to a public beating before being transferred to the custody of local police officers.
Ziaul Haque, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, formally verified the details of the crime. He confirmed that a police unit inspected the site on Tuesday night and that an investigation into Mr Islam’s direct involvement is currently underway. Law enforcement operations are continuing in the region to locate and arrest the remaining fugitives.
