On a calm Sunday afternoon in Rawalpindi, Pakistan completed a comprehensive whitewash against Sri Lanka in the 3rd and final ODI. The match, which seemed to be headed for a foregone conclusion after the first two games, saw Pakistan dominate once again, securing a one-sided victory to make it 3-0 in the series.
The target was not large, just 212 runs, but the initial overs were shaky for Pakistan. After an early dismissal of Hossainullah, with Pakistan at 8-1, the pressure was on. But veteran opener Fakhar Zaman and captain Babar Azam steadied the ship. Their 74-run partnership brought Pakistan back on track, with Fakhar playing a brilliant knock of 55 off 45 balls, including 8 boundaries.
Babar Azam, as always, looked composed, but was dismissed for 34 by an inspired spell from Wanders. At 101-4, the match was in the balance, and Pakistan’s victory seemed far from certain. However, Mohammad Rizwan and Hussain Talat had other ideas. They kept their cool and gradually shifted the momentum in Pakistan’s favour. Rizwan, with his signature calm and tactical approach, finished unbeaten on 61, while Talat contributed a steady 42. Their unbroken 100-run partnership saw Pakistan comfortably cross the finish line in the 45th over.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had made a solid start with a 50-run opening partnership between Nissanka and Mishera. But once Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Wasim Junior, began to attack, the Sri Lankan innings fell apart. Wasim’s line and length, along with his variations and yorkers, proved too much for the Lankan batsmen. He finished with figures of 3/47 from 10 overs.
Despite some resistance from Samarawickrama (48 runs) and Pathan Rathnayake (32 runs), Sri Lanka’s total of 210 runs was never going to be enough. Pakistan's bowlers, led by Wasim and Rauf, ensured there was no recovery, and Sri Lanka was bowled out with plenty of overs to spare.
In the end, Pakistan's dominance in both batting and bowling was on full display, completing a clean sweep. This whitewash sends a strong message ahead of upcoming series and is a morale-boosting achievement for a team in the rebuilding phase post-T20 World Cup.
This victory reinforces Pakistan's position as a strong team in both formats, as the players return to form and regain confidence. The team looks forward to maintaining this momentum in the upcoming matches, with fresh optimism after this stunning performance.
