Pakistan international opener Fakhar Zaman has been handed a two-match suspension following a ball-tampering incident during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) fixture, in a decision that has sparked significant debate within the cricketing community.

The disciplinary action was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after an investigation into events that unfolded during the match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings on 29 March at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The controversy emerged in the closing stages of Karachi’s innings, when on-field umpires observed irregularities in the condition of the ball prior to the final over. Upon inspection, they determined that the ball’s shape or surface had been altered, raising suspicions of tampering.

Video footage reviewed during the investigation appeared to show Fakhar Zaman alongside teammates Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf in conversation, during which the ball was being handled in a manner that drew scrutiny. Although no explicit act was conclusively visible in isolation, the cumulative evidence prompted officials to take action.

Following the incident, the umpires immediately imposed a five-run penalty against Lahore Qalandars and ordered the replacement of the ball, as permitted under the laws of cricket. The penalty proved pivotal in shaping the outcome of the match, as it eased the run chase for Karachi Kings.

The case was subsequently referred to match referee Roshan Mahanama, who conducted a formal hearing. Fakhar Zaman was found guilty of breaching Article 2.14 of the PCB Code of Conduct, which relates to the deliberate alteration of the condition of the ball and is classified as a Level 3 offence.

Despite denying the charge, Fakhar was sanctioned based on the available evidence, resulting in a suspension from the next two matches. The ruling means he will miss Lahore Qalandars’ upcoming fixtures against Multan Sultans and Islamabad United—both considered crucial encounters in the tournament.

The incident had an immediate impact on the match itself. Chasing a revised and more attainable target in the final over, Karachi Kings capitalised on the advantage. Abbas Afridi played a decisive role, striking a boundary and a six to guide his side to a four-wicket victory with three balls to spare.

Ball tampering remains one of the most serious offences in cricket, as it undermines the integrity of the game by unfairly altering the behaviour of the ball, particularly in terms of swing and seam movement. The PCB’s decision to impose a Level 3 sanction reflects the governing body’s firm stance on maintaining fair play and discipline within the league.

For Lahore Qalandars, the absence of an experienced opener like Fakhar Zaman represents a significant setback at a critical stage of the competition. His aggressive batting at the top of the order has been a key component of the team’s strategy, and his suspension will place additional pressure on the squad to adapt.

More broadly, the episode serves as a reminder of the strict regulations governing on-field conduct and the increasing use of video analysis in adjudicating contentious incidents. As the PSL continues to grow in stature, maintaining the credibility of the competition remains paramount, with authorities signalling zero tolerance for actions that could compromise the spirit of the game.
