A senior United Nations-affiliated diplomat has resigned from his post, issuing a stark warning to the international community that preparations may be underway for the possible use of nuclear weapons against Iran. The resignation has triggered widespread attention amid already heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Mohammad Safa, a veteran diplomat and executive director of the international organisation Patriotic Vision (PVA), announced his resignation on Monday (30 March) through a detailed public statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a lengthy open letter.
Safa, who has served since 2016 as the permanent representative of his organisation to the United Nations, alleged that influential lobbying networks within the UN system are shaping policy discussions in a direction that could lead to catastrophic consequences. He further claimed that elements within the international diplomatic establishment are failing to respond adequately to what he described as escalating risks of nuclear escalation involving Iran.
In his post, Safa shared an image of Tehran and wrote that the global community was “not fully grasping the seriousness of the situation”, alleging that preparations were being made within the UN system in relation to a potential nuclear strike scenario.
Rejecting the notion of military escalation against Iran, Safa emphasised that Tehran is a densely populated metropolis, not an isolated battlefield. He stressed that the city is home to nearly ten million people, including families, children, and working civilians.
He questioned the global reaction that would follow if similar attacks were directed at major Western capitals, including Washington, Berlin, Paris or London, arguing that such a scenario would be universally condemned as catastrophic and unacceptable.
Safa stated that his decision to resign was motivated by what he described as systemic pressure and political interference within international institutions. He alleged that certain UN officials are reluctant to hold the United States and Israel accountable under international law, particularly in relation to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
According to him, these dynamics have created an environment in which impartial diplomatic work has become increasingly difficult. He further claimed that powerful lobbying groups are attempting to reshape global governance structures and influence decision-making processes at the highest level.
The former diplomat also claimed that following the escalation of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, he faced sustained criticism, intimidation, and what he described as unfounded allegations due to his differing positions on the issue.
He alleged that both he and his family have received threats, and that he has been subjected to censorship and professional marginalisation. Safa further argued that certain senior officials within international institutions have abused their authority by aligning themselves with specific political interests.
Referencing recent mass protests in the United States under the slogan “No Kings”, Safa urged global citizens to take to the streets in peaceful protest against the potential use of nuclear weapons. He argued that ordinary people remain the most powerful force capable of preventing large-scale destruction and averting what he described as a potential “nuclear winter”.
He also stated that he had originally intended to resign as early as 2023 but chose to remain in post for an additional period in order to monitor developments closely.
As of now, the United Nations has not issued any official response to Safa’s resignation or the serious allegations contained in his statement. The claims have nonetheless drawn attention due to their implications for international security discourse and ongoing tensions surrounding Iran’s geopolitical position.
