A tragic incident has been reported from Bijoynagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district, where a 24-year-old expatriate returnee lost his life after being struck by lightning during a sudden storm. The incident occurred on Monday evening (30 March) at approximately 8:30pm in the Simna Bazar area of Tann Manipur village under Pattan Union, along the Simna–Brahmanbaria road.
The deceased has been identified as Abdur Rahman, the elder son of local resident Hebju Miah. He had previously spent several years working in Saudi Arabia before returning to Bangladesh around four months ago in search of new livelihood opportunities and to be closer to his family.
According to eyewitness accounts, the weather changed abruptly as dark clouds gathered over the area, followed by strong winds and heavy rainfall accompanied by frequent lightning strikes. The rapid deterioration of conditions created panic among residents and passers-by in the vicinity.
Professor Ali Azam Mir, an eyewitness, stated that Abdur Rahman had taken shelter under a roadside tree when the storm intensified. It was at this moment that lightning struck the area, killing him instantly.
Local accounts suggest that the young man had been spending time near a tea stall shortly before the incident. Union Parishad member Akhtar Khan confirmed that Abdur Rahman had been seen drinking tea at a nearby shop and was standing in the area when the weather began to worsen suddenly.
As the storm escalated, people in the surrounding area rushed to safer locations, with visibility and movement becoming difficult due to heavy rain and wind. Once the weather conditions improved, locals discovered that Abdur Rahman had been struck and killed by lightning.
The sudden death has cast a shadow of grief over the local community, particularly as the victim was a young man who had recently returned from abroad with hopes of rebuilding his future at home. Residents described the incident as both unexpected and deeply distressing, highlighting the unpredictable nature of lightning-related accidents during the pre-monsoon season.
Authorities emphasise that taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms significantly increases the risk of lightning strikes, as elevated isolated objects are more vulnerable to electrical discharge.
Bijoynagar Police confirmed the incident and stated that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving information from local residents. Police Inspector (Investigation) Rajib Sarkar verified the death and said that necessary legal procedures were being carried out in line with standard protocol for unnatural deaths caused by natural disasters.

Lightning strikes remain a significant hazard in Bangladesh, particularly during the transitional weather period when sudden thunderstorms are common. Rural and semi-urban areas are especially vulnerable due to open landscapes, roadside trees, and limited access to immediate protective shelter.
Meteorological experts consistently advise that individuals should avoid open spaces, tall trees, and metal structures during thunderstorms, and seek safe indoor shelter whenever possible.
This latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unpredictable weather conditions, particularly for those caught outdoors during rapidly developing storms.
