United States-based forward Ronan Sullivan has emerged as one of the standout names in the ongoing SAFF Under-20 Championship, with the young attacker hinting that he is saving his best performance for the semi-final showdown against Nepal. His growing influence has made him one of the most talked-about players on social media, as Bangladesh prepare for a decisive knockout fixture.

The 2026 SAFF Under-20 campaign has seen Bangladesh score three goals so far, all of which have involved Sullivan either directly or through decisive contributions. His form has not only impressed supporters but also drawn attention from former players and analysts, who believe he possesses the potential to become a leading attacking force for the national youth setup.

Bangladesh began their tournament with a strong 2–0 victory over Pakistan on 24 March, a match in which Sullivan delivered a match-winning performance by scoring both goals. His second strike—a spectacular 30-yard free-kick in the 53rd minute—was widely shared online, with many fans comparing its technique and precision to elite-level set-piece specialists in world football.

He continued his influence in the group stage fixture against India, where his assist played a crucial role in Bangladesh securing a valuable equaliser. His consistency in creating and finishing chances has positioned him as one of the key tactical assets in coach Mark Cox’s system.

Semi-final anticipation against Nepal

Bangladesh are now preparing to face Nepal in the semi-final at the National Stadium in Malé. The fixture carries added significance, as Bangladesh defeated Nepal in the 2024 edition of the tournament final. Nepal, however, arrive in strong form after topping Group A, while Bangladesh finished as runners-up in Group B.

Despite the challenge, Sullivan remains confident about his side’s prospects and has hinted at a bold personal target for the match.

Ronan Sullivan“I think I can score two goals. That is my expectation. It will be a difficult match, but I believe we will win as a team.”

The forward emphasised that although the encounter is expected to be tightly contested, he believes Bangladesh have the collective strength to secure a place in the final.

Praise from former striker

Former Bangladesh international Zahid Hasan Emily has also praised Sullivan’s attacking qualities, highlighting his timing, movement, and finishing ability. Speaking in a football podcast, Emily noted that Sullivan’s second goal against Pakistan demonstrated excellent positional awareness and composure in the air.

He described the forward’s header as particularly impressive, pointing out that such goals are often difficult for goalkeepers to anticipate due to the speed and trajectory of the delivery. According to Emily, Sullivan’s ability to judge runs and connect cleanly with crosses marks him out as a natural striker.

Twin brother storyline and rising attention

Sullivan’s rise has also brought attention to his twin brother, Declan Sullivan, who is also part of the Bangladesh youth football setup. While Ronan has already made a significant impact in the tournament, Declan, who plays as a defender, is yet to make his competitive debut for the national side.

Their inclusion in the squad has generated interest among fans, particularly given their development in the United States football system before linking up with Bangladesh’s youth programme.

Group stage drama and disciplinary setback

Bangladesh’s build-up to the semi-final has also been shaped by a tense 1–1 draw against India. The match was marked by a touchline confrontation involving head coach Mark Cox and India’s goalkeeping coach Sandeep Nandy, resulting in both receiving red cards from the referee. As a consequence, Cox will be suspended for the semi-final against Nepal.

Despite the setback, Bangladesh finished level on four points with India in Group B, although India topped the group due to superior goal difference.

Looking ahead

With momentum, confidence, and a standout attacking talent in Ronan Sullivan, Bangladesh enter the semi-final carrying both expectation and belief. Much of the focus will now rest on whether the young forward can translate his impressive form into another decisive performance when it matters most against Nepal.
