Although Bangladesh’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup finals have already been extinguished, head coach Javier Cabrera is determined to end the campaign on a positive note when his side face Singapore in their final group-stage fixture.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 6:00pm Bangladesh time at Singapore’s National Stadium, represents the concluding chapter of Bangladesh’s qualifying journey. While the result will not alter their elimination, it carries significance in terms of pride, progression, and statistical improvement.
This fixture also marks what is expected to be Cabrera’s final appearance in charge of Bangladesh, with his contract set to expire on 30 April. Although no official confirmation has been made regarding his future, widespread speculation suggests that his tenure is unlikely to continue amid growing dissatisfaction among sections of supporters.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, Cabrera remains focused on delivering a strong finish. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, he stressed the importance of ending the qualifying campaign with a competitive performance.
He acknowledged that while Bangladesh had shown moments of strong football throughout the campaign, the points tally had fallen short of expectations.

| Javier Cabrera | “This is the final match of the Asian Cup qualifiers. We have performed quite well, but we have probably collected fewer points than we expected. We want a strong finish and to fight for all three points tomorrow.” |
Cabrera emphasised that his side would aim for a committed and disciplined performance, highlighting the importance of maintaining intensity until the final whistle.
Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuyan echoed his coach’s sentiments, framing the match as an opportunity to achieve a historic points tally in the qualification campaign.
He noted that securing a victory would lift Bangladesh to eight points from six matches, a total he described as a significant milestone for the national side in a competitive qualifying group.
“We are fully prepared,” Jamal stated, adding that the squad had shown consistent improvement throughout the campaign despite missed opportunities in earlier fixtures.
Bangladesh are also expected to benefit from strong support in Singapore, where a large expatriate community is anticipated to attend the match. Jamal highlighted the importance of this backing, noting that overseas fans often provide vital motivation for the national team during away fixtures.
He expressed appreciation for those who will attend the stadium, as well as supporters who were unable to secure tickets, acknowledging that international matches offer rare opportunities for the diaspora to witness the national team in action.
Singapore have already secured qualification from Group C, returning to the AFC Asian Cup finals for the first time since 1984. Their earlier encounter with Bangladesh proved decisive, with Singapore claiming a 2–1 victory in the reverse fixture.
Cabrera reflected on that match, noting that Bangladesh had started strongly but failed to maintain momentum after conceding control in midfield. He pointed out that Singapore capitalised efficiently during the middle phase of the game, while Bangladesh’s late resurgence came too late to salvage a result.
However, he also highlighted encouraging signs from the closing stages, when Bangladesh created several opportunities that could have secured at least a point.
Despite elimination from qualification, Bangladesh enter the final match with a clear objective: to restore pride and end the campaign with a positive result. For Cabrera, it is an opportunity to sign off on a competitive note, while for the players, it represents a chance to achieve what would be considered a respectable finish in a challenging group.
With improved performances noted across the campaign, both coach and captain believe the team is moving in the right direction. The final test against Singapore will now determine whether that progress can be reflected in the result that concludes their Asian Cup journey.
