A deeply disturbing incident in Anwara upazila of Chattogram has led to the recovery of the body of a 26-year-old housewife, alongside the arrest and subsequent imprisonment of her husband on charges of abetment to suicide. Authorities say the case has also raised serious concerns after it emerged that the husband allegedly filmed his wife during her final moments on a mobile phone.

The deceased has been identified as Jinnat Ara Begum (26), a resident of her husband’s home in the Tailardwip village under Barakhain Union. Her body was recovered by police on Sunday (29 March) at approximately 11:30am from the couple’s residence. The matter was later confirmed on Monday (30 March) by Anwara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Junayed Chowdhury.

Her husband, Md Omar Faruk (30), has been arrested in connection with the incident and has since been sent to jail through a court order on charges of instigating suicide.

Disturbing allegation of video recording

According to police statements, a mobile phone belonging to the accused was seized during the investigation. Authorities allege that the device contained footage of the woman during the incident, which has since been recovered and added to the case file.

Police further stated that the accused admitted during initial questioning that he had recorded the scene on his phone while his wife was in distress inside the room. The video is also reported to have circulated on social media platforms, intensifying public outrage and concern.

Background of the victim

Jinnat Ara Begum was the daughter of Md Hossain from the Joldi Miar Bazar area of Banshkhali upazila. She had been married to Omar Faruk, a resident of Tailardwip village in Anwara, for approximately two years. The couple had an eight-month-old son.

Family sources and local residents stated that Jinnat Ara had recently returned to her in-laws’ house after visiting her parental home in Banshkhali just a few days prior to the incident.

Domestic dispute preceding the incident

Preliminary investigations suggest that tensions had developed between the couple over financial matters, including a dispute related to pledged gold ornaments. Police indicated that such disagreements had reportedly contributed to ongoing domestic friction within the household.

On the day of the incident, it is alleged that Omar Faruk was not inside the house at the time Jinnat Ara locked herself in a room. Authorities say that instead of intervening directly, he remained outside and recorded the incident through a window using his mobile phone.

Police action and investigation

Upon receiving information, police officers from Anwara Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body. The husband was taken into custody shortly afterwards. His mobile phone was confiscated as part of the investigation, and the recorded footage was reportedly discovered during forensic examination.

Officer-in-Charge Md Junayed Chowdhury confirmed that the accused admitted during preliminary interrogation that he had filmed the incident. He further stated that the evidence collected, including the video footage, has been included in the investigation dossier.

The accused was later produced before a court and subsequently sent to prison.

Public concern and wider implications

The incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for awareness and intervention mechanisms in domestic disputes, particularly where vulnerable individuals may be at risk within household environments.
